THE 35 BEST SHOWS ON TV--EVER
New York Post ^ | April 27, 2008 | ROBERT RORKE AND STEPHEN LYNCH

Our parents told us TV would melt our brains. While it's possible "Punky Brewster" and "A-Team" did just that, along the way we saw some genius art. Television can't play 90 minutes on the big screen and vanish into the bargain bin. And it lacks one author to take it from introduction to the final page. Yet within these boundaries, there are a small number of shows that capture our attention, our obsession, and create enduring stories. How many? 35. They're listed here.

I saw it before I came to faith in Christ, without a doubt one of the scariest films ever made... very subtle. I refuse to watch it again, frighteningly demonic.

"Victory at Sea was amazing. I wonder if it is on Netflix..."

You can buy the entire series on DVD for $5 at Walmart, just go to the $5 DVD bin, there are usually 2 to 5 copies.

Pure Horseshit....

Sex and the City makes the top 20 ahead of Gunsmoke? No Twilight Zone or Andy Griffith?

The funniest sitcom EVER: WKRP in Cincinnati.

Amen. Hands-down best sit-com ever.

Fever: Wow. A suit like that must spend most of the time in the shop.

Flytrap: Man...I've got suits you can't even get parts for.

The first three or four seasons of All in the Family were great.

Still the funniest ever scenes were with Sammy Davis Jr,

“Mr. Davis, do you take cream and sugar in your eye?”

I remember reading a TV Guide (my dad always got one - it was his bible) the season Gilligans Island debuted. I thought it was neat that the ‘lagoon’ in the background of the picture you posted was made on the back lot...they showed pictures of it being built, etc... neat.

I think the decline started when Niles and Daphne got together. The sexual tension prior to that was priceless.

Could not agree more although I think I even noticed the writing wasn't as sharp during the later few years, and if I remember correctly I think it was before she and Niles got together. I've been watching the reruns, and must say that although there was a softening in writing it still was better than anything else out there, and, imo, still is.

I agree. Frasier was like getting an intelligent one-act play in your living room. Fantastic acting and scripts that assumed the viewers were educated and smart!

Darn, hate it when someone states something better than I :-) No, could not have said it better (and obviously didn't):-).

I have bought it for nothing for every member of my family.
Wonderful series.

My vote for best on the airwaves: HBO’s “The Wire”.
Hands down the most amazing series on the airwaves.

I'm assuming this list was limited to American TV, because the best show ever made in the human history is Doctor Who.

Well Monty Python is there so, I think the US heavy list is an artifact of parochialism.

34-1! WTF

But in addition to eliminating quiz/game, reality, chat, variety, news shows, mini-series - I would also eliminate non-US origin shows to give the USA a chance, otherwise my list of 35 best would be loaded the other way (but not so heavily)

Otherwise: The Avengers, Prisoner, Callan, Dad's Army, Minder, The Onedin Line, Porridge, Robin of Sherwood, Fawlty Towers, 'Allo 'Allo, Black Adder, New Tricks are gonna knock US shows off the list.

And to assuage the feelings (which are important) of USA readers: Current running US shows that will probably make future Best Shows ever list
Battlestar Galactica, House, How I Met Your Mother, My Name is Earl, NCIS, Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles
