Our parents told us TV would melt our brains. While it's possible "Punky Brewster" and "A-Team" did just that, along the way we saw some genius art. Television can't play 90 minutes on the big screen and vanish into the bargain bin. And it lacks one author to take it from introduction to the final page. Yet within these boundaries, there are a small number of shows that capture our attention, our obsession, and create enduring stories. How many? 35. They're listed here.

I'm shocked Twilight Zone was not mentioned. Rod Serling was a brilliant writer/director and also had some of the best writers doing screen plays. The original Tonight Show with Steve Allen also needs to be included.
However American Idol...give me a break. This is dreck of the first order and I am wholly convinced the voting is rigged to spur ratings.

Arrested Development. An excellent show that was cancelled way too quickly. Didn’t run long enough to make the list but very underrated.

The best TV show ever was I, Claudius, the 1976 mini-series.Just happen to be watching that on DVD. It appears to have all been done in the studio and I've been trying to figure out how they did the lighting for the outdoor scenes. As for shows missing off of the list.
Steve Allen's The Tonight Show
Art Linkletter's House Party
The Gary Moore Show
The Original Micky Mouse Club
Mr. Peepers
Love That Bob
The Jacky Gleason Show
The Carol Burnett Show
The Ed Sullivan Show
Sid Ceacers Show of Shows
And many more. Like they said the list was compiled by a bunch of ignorent punks under 40.(PS. ignorent does not mean stupid it just meand that they don't know what they are talking about.

That’s the (partial) cast of EMERGENCY! Another Jack Webb production (ran about eight years). Proved to the world that his ex-wife Julie London could act, and I always wondered why she didn’t care to do more.

The best (scary) Hitchcock was the nurse who was a man who went out on a rainy night leaving wet foot prints across the foyer.

I am 48 years old and I’m proud to say I’ve never seen or have barely watched about 30 of the 35 shows on the list.
If that is the “best” of TV then it truly is a wasteland.
