Our parents told us TV would melt our brains. While it's possible "Punky Brewster" and "A-Team" did just that, along the way we saw some genius art. Television can't play 90 minutes on the big screen and vanish into the bargain bin. And it lacks one author to take it from introduction to the final page. Yet within these boundaries, there are a small number of shows that capture our attention, our obsession, and create enduring stories. How many? 35. They're listed here.

I remember that one with Shirley Temple! Thanks for the memory jog.
Oprah doesn’t cut it.
If they are going to put a show of that genre on the list, they need to go back to the source - luv him or hate him -
Phil Donahue
I think I’d also add The Waltons.
I think that is the show I remember most from being a child. Who can forget “Good night, John Boy”?
Good Times was not a spin off of All in the family
Dark Shadows followed “Where the Action is “, which I watched at my girlfriends house . If I wanted to stay , I had to also watch Dark Shadows with her and her sister . I always stayed .
Good Times was a spin-off of an All in the Family spin-off, Maude, so I guess AITF gets the credit for it being around.
My personal TZ fave remains the one with Agnes Moorehead as the woman fighting the tiny aliens who crashed into her attic in their UFO. Not one word was spoken until the end, where...maybe I’d better not give the ending away, in case there’s a soul alive that hasn’t seen it.
MASH was my first thought.
The Haunting scared me stiff. My sister and I were home alone, and we were too scared to get out of our chair/off the couch. It’s still one of my very favorite movies.
Car 54 where are you? That was the funniest show ever. The guy who played the Captain was a comic genius. Lawman, Bonanza, The fugitive.
My 14 and 12 year old children just discovered Home Improvement. He says it’s the funniest show he’s ever seen. It beats “Whose Line Is It Anyway?” Of course, he only saw a couple of those shows, as I severely restricted that one. :)
I hurried home to watch Dark Shadows after school--alone...sigh!
You are rediscovring the Hillibillies....they were a riot! That was when you could make a hillarious SITCOM without nakedness and profanity. Don”t forget others from the era; Hogan”s Heroes, The Munsters, I Dream of Jeannie and Bewitched.
OK, so the entire ‘mythology’ story arc or whatever they called it was almost as bad as the plot of ‘Lost’. However, the episodes that could stand on their own were pretty good.
That and Sesame Street were the only two I agreed with.
My favorites weren’t on there: Babylon 5, Stargate SG-1, Homefront, and Alias.
I loved Remington Steele and Young Riders, too but I don’t think they were the best ever.
I did not know Good Times was a spinoff of Maude.....what character was on Maude?
I LOVE Babylon 5, but I can’t watch the last season. No Ivanova? That’s just wrong.
