Dead actor Roy Scheider donates to Barack Obama campaign anyway
LA Times ^ | Aprl 23, 2008 | Andrew Malcolm

Sen. Barack Obama does come from the Chicago school of politics, where historically voter turnout has been unusually high for residents of certain graveyards. And he has been unusually successful raising money.

Now, he's raising money by raising the dead.

The Times' campaign finance expert Dan Morain has found Obama campaign records reporting a $50 donation by Roy Scheider, who lists his occupation as actor and his home as Sag Harbor, N.Y.

Remember him from many great movies, including "The French Connection" and "Jaws" and the immortal line: "You're gonna need a bigger boat"?

According to the campaign records, Scheider made the donation March 10.

Trouble is, Scheider died exactly one month before that, on Feb. 10, at age 75. Just another example of Hollywood's undying affection for Democrats.

Obama recently reported other donations from breathing actors: Sam Waterston, $2,300; Lynn Redgrave, $600; Sydney Poitier, $250; and Treat Williams, $100.

Scheider was unavailable for comment. However, informed of the deceased donor's generosity, an Obama campaign spokesman said late Tuesday it had come under a monthly credit card donation program and that it would be halted this month. The $50 March donation would be donated to another cause, the spokesman said.

The dead can't vote - but they can still donate to their favorite candidate.

Keep digging. There has to be something going on with these crazy small donations going through the roof.

It just fascinates me how the “down trodden” come up with OODLES of BUCKS to give to Obama. While on the other hand, health care and more government handouts are WHY they are voting for them. Help me out with this ... .

I'll be amazed if there isn't something there. Obama is raising huge amounts of money, month after month, in small amounts, from first-time donators, and yet he's not attracting votes in a dramatic way.

I wouldn't be surprised if Hillary comes up with something on this. She knows the tricks too, and she's desperate, with very little time left.

Wasn’t Scheider a Conservative? That would make it even more unbelievable....

Is she an American Citizen? I thought that’s against the law - like ol’ Sir Elton John giving Hilary’s campaign *music for nothing*

>>>The dead can’t vote

Not true. You’ve obviously never seen the voter turn out in NJ.

I would love to see an African American elected as POTUS. Just not this one.

Wish Michael Steele’s run for Governor of Maryland or the US Senate had been successful - putting him in serious future contention.

He is such a happy, positive, practical guy...with such presence. Not charisma - character.

I had begun to wonder about the sources of his donations too.

Doesn’t the author realize that the Messiah can raise the dead so I’m sure this is a legal donation. The Messiah simply raised Scheider long enough to get him to write a check and then sent him back to paradise.
