A Republican candidate for Congress in the 11th district told the Times-News on Tuesday that he foresees the United States having a presence in Iraq for an indeterminate amount of time.
Highlands attorney John Armor said the troop surge in Iraq is working. He believes the country can start to withdraw troops "in a few years" and only needs to maintain a "tripwire" level of troops in the country, similar to Germany during the Cold War.
"You keep tripwire troops," Armor said. "It used to be until the Soviet Union fell that we kept troops in Europe not so much to keep Europe from being invaded (but) so the invasion troops would kill Americans, and we would be in the war. That's tripwire."
He said he foresees a small force in Iraq for some time.
"I hope we don't have them as long as we had in Korea," Armor said. "We are talking about a tripwire. They are there to die. They are not talking about holding ground, if you want to be brutal about it. That is what it means."
Armor said the United States is fighting a different type of war, and the enemy needs to be attacked. He said people did not listen to leaders prior to World War II about the threat Germany posed.
"I look at Winston Churchill's position between 1937 and 1939," Armor said. "He was consistently saying here is a man, speaking of Adolf Hitler, who intends to attack other people. And we should not allow him to prosper and continue the growth of his army and navy because we are going to face him in war. He was consistently slapped down."
He said the United States has been threatened and attacked and needs to respond.
"When you have people who have publicly threatened to kill you and to attack and kill your nation, when they are consistent about it, especially when they have taken a couple of bites out of that apple, you've got to take them seriously," Armor said. "And if you take them seriously, then you oppose them militarily, which is exactly what we are doing."
Freepmail or ping me on the thread to be added to the John Armor for Congress ping list.
Well don’t tell O’Bambum, he won’t like this one bit! He plans to declare DEFEAT of USA if he is sworn in. If he is ever sworn in, there will be lots of swearing going on for FOUR YEARS! by me!
Considering how long we’ve been in Germany, Japan, and Korea Id say we should expect to be in Iraq for a very long time.
Rave on Brother!! Tell it like it is.
Couldn’t agree with him more.
Yet the ONLY subject that made it into print was my position on the Iraq War. That's the least favored of the positions I have taken. Why would the paper do that?
Well, the Times-News is a wholly-owned subsidiary of the NY Times, don't you see? They want Heath Shuler to survive. And the editors view me as a problem in that regard.
Congressman Billybob
I suspected that there was much more to the conversation when I read the article. They wanted to pick out one thing you said that, while completely true, might sound "brutal" to some sensitive ears, those who wouldn't view your remarks in terms of creating disincentives for enemy nations.
They also managed to include the quote, “They are there to die.” Which is unfortunate, because it makes you look callous.
We didn't build the largest military base on the planet and the largest embassy complex on the planet because we were planning to leave Iraq in short order.....
If you take them seriously you oppose them militarily, philosophically, politically, socially, scientifically, intellectually, spiritually, legally, individually and humorously.
