Montana’s wolf population increased 34 percent over the past year, to an estimated 422 wolves in 73 packs...
The wolves are nearly equally distributed between northern and southern Montana...although the bulk of the population growth was in northwestern and far western Montana...
Wolves are still listed under the Endangered Species Act. Delisting was set for late March, but lawsuits are expected to delay that.
As for conflicts with ranchers, the FWP reported an increase in the number of confirmed cattle deaths due to wolves, from 32 to 75, and an increase in the number of sheep deaths, from four to 27.
Two llamas and three dogs also were confirmed killed by wolves...
“We know Montana’s wolves inhabit places where people live, work and recreate,” Sime said. “We expect and try to anticipate conflicts and gear much of our wolf-management work toward helping landowners reduce the risk of livestock depredations.”
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service planned to delist the gray wolves in the Northern Rockies n Montana, Idaho, Wyoming and parts of Washington and Utah on March 28.

This is already happening in some areas of Idaho.
Next come the ponies, horses, and dogs—none of which can stand up to an attack by a PACK of wolves.
Next it becomes impossible for people to venture into the wilderness—because even with a gun you can’t face an attack by four or five starving wolves at one time.
There is a reason people wanted to get rid of the wolves.
In the safe, tame 20th century, people forgot that reason.
They are about to relearn it.

I noticed this morning that Idaho is taking action before the delisting actually happens. The animal and enviro wackos are going to go bonkers over this.

BOISE, Idaho (AP) - The House has approved changes to state law that would let ranchers, outfitters and pet owners kill wolves harassing livestock.
House lawmakers voted 65-4 on Wednesday to give owners up to 72 hours to report wolves they've killed after catching them annoying, disturbing or stalking animals or livestock.
The Idaho Department of Fish and Game is rewriting its wolf laws, ahead of the expected lifting of federal Endangered Species Act protections this year.
The Senate has already passed the bill. It is now ready for Gov. C.L. "Butch" Otter's signature.

However, don't you find it interesting that the article mentions the number a cattle. sheep and dogs killed by the wolves but they do not mention the number of people killed by the wolves.
Being as knowledgeable as you are on the subject I am sure you would know how many people have been killed by wolves in Montana in the time period referenced in the article.
Could you please provide the number of people killed by wolves along with a source for your data?

So why go beyond this point? If the wolves are fine at a certain level, we still have them, and they don’t have to kill livestock and pets to find something to eat, then start culling the packs again!

Just curious, but does the fish and wildlife service compensate ranchers for animals lost to wolves? If so then the ranchers have nothing to complain about. If not, then the FWS and the greenies got nothing to complain about if ranchers kill wolves.
You’re correct, without a doubt there will be lawsuits.
But if the wolf population keeps growing at the present rate it will be a factor in those lawsuits, I believe.

The ranchers are supposed to be compensated if there is a licensed wildlife officer present before and during the wolf attacks.
This does not happen.
Wolf packs often kill at night without a USFWS official watching...thus lots of blood, paw prints, slashing marks...do not count after the attack.
Second, wolf packs chase pregant cows who then mis-carry their calves ...
Third, sheep and cows do not eat / put on weight when they are under stress from predators which costs the family ranchers money.
Most family ranchers have bank loans, taxes, feed and vet bills...
