Saddam's Dangerous Friends
The Weekly Standard ^ | 3-24-2008 | Stephen Hayes

Posted on 03/15/2008 6:18:02 AM PDT by ikez78

This ought to be big news. Throughout the early and mid-1990s, Saddam Hussein actively supported an influential terrorist group headed by the man who is now al Qaeda's second-in-command, according to an exhaustive study issued last week by the Pentagon. "Saddam supported groups that either associated directly with al Qaeda (such as the Egyptian Islamic Jihad, led at one time by bin Laden's deputy, Ayman al-Zawahiri) or that generally shared al Qaeda's stated goals and objectives." According to the Pentagon study, Egyptian Islamic Jihad was one of many jihadist groups that Iraq's former dictator funded, trained, equipped, and armed.

Thank you for the ping! The denial that some say, most on the left, that Saddam had no ties to terrorism/Al Qaeda is disgusting. We know he did. Thank you for your post and the fine hard work of Stephen Hayes.

From the article.

“What’s happening here is obvious. Military historians and terrorism analysts are engaged in a good faith effort to review the captured documents from the Iraqi regime and provide a dispassionate, fact-based examination of Saddam Hussein’s long support of jihadist terrorism. Most reporters don’t care. They are trapped in a world where the Bush administration lied to the country about an Iraq-al Qaeda connection, and no amount of evidence to the contrary—not even the words of the fallen Iraqi regime itself—can convince them to reexamine their mistaken assumptions.”

Very informative but the misdirection by mainstream media has already been planted in the average Jane or John Doe reader. While the WH continuously supports its actions, the word is not getting through. And the average American is tired of hearing about the war on terrorism. They want lower gas prices, a chance to buy or keep their home, a job, etc. The American economy is the pits is what the average American is hearing and they’re angry.

Another amazing piece by the irreplaceable Stephen Hayes. Extremely compelling. The best summary of evidence linking Saddam to Islamist terrorist groups I've read. This is the proverbial mountain of evidence.

Saddam was clearly not the peripheral figure in the Jihadist war that the media has painted. Saddam's Iraq is looking more and more like the queen alien from Aliens in the heart of the hive pumping out one monster after another.

This should be required reading for every denier from the Left to the Ron Paul Buchanan Right.

I remember the controversy regarding the leaks about this report and the fact that the Pentagon was dragging their feet on the release, but then it died out. All we got were bits and and pieces of the report and it was difficult to piece together the full picture.

John McCain should be asked about this report. I’ll bet that his reaction will not be as meek as President Bush’s.

The host of the most listened-to overnight radio show, George Norry, delighted in reporting that the DoD report (a DoD report!) concluded that there was no connection between Iraq and Al Qaeda -- thus proving that Bush "lied." Something that Mr. Norry gets off on nightly, several times.

The early leaks that prompted Norry's delight stated that there was no "direct operational link" between Iraq and al Qaeda. Saddam and OBL did not literally sleep together. That's all it took. Millions of mostly apolitical folks heard the elation in Norry's voice.

To his credit, though with some degree of reticence, Mr. Norry on another night rushed through a news item stating simply that two Harvard University economists found that insurgent groups are responsive to "antiresolve" statements in the media. (That means of course that the enemy gets encouragement from the likes of Mr. Norry, right Mr. Norry?)

So what was the source of the latest BDS sufferers' delight?

All it took was a leak to a gullible reporter, one misleading line in the study's executive summary, a boneheaded Pentagon press office, an incompetent White House, and widespread journalistic negligence.

On Monday, March 10, 2008, Warren P. Strobel, a reporter from the McClatchy News Service first reported that the new Pentagon study was coming. "An exhaustive review of more than 600,000 Iraqi documents that were captured after the 2003 U.S. invasion has found no evidence that Saddam Hussein's regime had any operational links with Osama bin Laden's al Qaida terrorist network." McClatchy is a newspaper chain that serves many of America's largest cities.

May the future bring interesting times for McClatchy newspapers.. oh wait! it already has. Layoffs a comin' by the droves.

I really appreciate the ping! Until someone shows me an aerial view of a Salman Pak in Egypt or Afghanistan I will remain convinced Saddam trained perhaps tens of thousands of Jihad Johnnies to wage terrorist war, some of whom flew planes into two buildings in New York and one in Washington, DC. I am also convinced that the dnc and leftist media would not believe it even if the names of all 20 highjackers showed up on cafeteria rolls and paymaster stubs found in Salman Pak. The democrap party and their sycophancy in media ARE the internal enemy of the Republic. Witness how they fawn over a radical racist who speaks out of both sides of his racist mouth. Watch as the dnc goon squad spreads out this weekend to fabricate excuses for why the racial hatred and anti-american preaching of Obamas pastor of 20 years should be ignored in order to prevent transference of rational connection to Barry HUSSEIN Obama.
