A Chaldean Catholic archbishop kidnapped last month in northern Iraq has been found dead, the information service of the Italian Catholic Church said Thursday.
The body of Paulos Faraj Rahho, the archbishop of Mosul, was found near the northern city, the Church said, quoting the auxiliary archbishop of Baghdad, Shlemon Warduni.
"We recovered his body near Mosul," Warduni said, according to the Church's news agency SIR. "The kidnappers had buried him."
Rahho was kidnapped on February 29 in Mosul after a deadly shootout in which three of his companions were killed.
Iraqi forces in Mosul had fanned out to search for Rahho, whose abduction was branded as "atrocious" by Pope Benedict XVI.
Rahho was the latest in a long line of Chaldean clerics to be abducted in Iraq since the US-led invasion in March 2003. Two priests were kidnapped in the city in October, and last June a priest and three deacons were attacked in front of their church.
Iraq's Christians, with the Chaldean sect by far the largest community, were said to number as many as 800,000 before the 2003 invasion.
Associated with the "Crusader" invaders and regarded as well-off, they are now victims of sectarian cleansing, killings and kidnappings at the hands of both Sunni and Shiite Islamists, as well as criminal gangs.
Since 2001, I have been saying that this is a holy war. any doubters now?

Amish extremists, no doubt.
What a shame. Another martyr for the Christian faith. And so many of us remain under the false impression that the age of the Christian martyrs is ancient history.
I demand that Islamic leaders publicly, loudly and REPEATEDLY denounce, renounce and CONDEMN the crimes of the Islamist Crusaders. If caught, the sons of pigs should be publicly executed.
Instead, we'll be treated to another whining "Muslims scared" campaign.
The “Religion of Peace” is not likely to satisfy, but I agree with you. Does anyone have a really sensitive decibel meter for measuring the sound of the Iraqi Muslim Moderate community on this?
*crickets chirping*
The religion of peace. Notice how the article criticized the Chaldean Christians saying that they were well off and associated with the Crusades, as if it were their fault they were kidnapped and murdered. Also the article failed to mention that they were tortured before they were killed and that there has been continual violence against the Chaldean Catholics in Iraq, the Coptic Catholics in Egypt and Christians in Africa such as in Nigeria and Darfur.
It sounds as though he was also badly wounded in the shootout, and died soon after. Since he was no longer any use to them for propaganda purposes, they buried him, hoping no one would find him.
Crusade!
"Iraqi forces in Mosul had fanned out to search for Rahho..."
The take all innocent deaths caused by terrorists quite seriously. They hate the terrorists as much as we do.
My his soul and the souls of the faithful departed, through the Mercy of God, rest in peace.
Sad news. May his flock be comforted and their faith strengthened. The thugs and terrorists who kidnapped Paulos Faraj Rahho can kill the man, but they cannot kill the message of love and promise that he brought to his church.
If ever there was a religion based on Sadism it appears ISLAM would fit the bill.
See my tag line.
Sad news....prayers for a faithful servant.
Yet the liberals will continue to say that Islam is a “religion of peace”, and Christianity is a religion of hatred and intolerance.
Servant of God Paulos Rahho, pray for us.
