Symptoms: Metabolic Syndrome Is Tied to Diet Soda
NY Times ^ | February 5, 2008 | NICHOLAS BAKALAR

Researchers have found a correlation between drinking diet soda and metabolic syndrome — the collection of risk factors for cardiovascular disease and diabetes that include abdominal obesity, high cholesterol and blood glucose levels — and elevated blood pressure.

The scientists gathered dietary information on more than 9,500 men and women ages 45 to 64 and tracked their health for nine years.

--snip--

But the one-third who ate the most fried food increased their risk by 25 percent compared with the one-third who ate the least, and surprisingly, the risk of developing metabolic syndrome was 34 percent higher among those who drank one can of diet soda a day compared with those who drank none.

“This is interesting,” said Lyn M. Steffen, an associate professor of epidemiology at the University of Minnesota and a co-author of the paper, which was posted online in the journal Circulation on Jan. 22. “Why is it happening? Is it some kind of chemical in the diet soda, or something about the behavior of diet soda drinkers?”

You only drink diet coke if you are fat.

That’s why it’s linked.

I know what I am talking about.

I can give up the Diet-Coke but I'm not giving up the rum.

Now where's that shot glass...

I drink diet Coke and I'm not fat, nor did I start drinking it for that reason. I don't like the sugary taste of regular cola.

Never daily dose yourself with an artificial sweetner that the US Army also looked at for use as a chemical weapon...

I have refused ALL “diet” sodas, but I LIKE coke “zero”.

Call me a shill, or what you will. I LIKE Coke Zero, which is far more than I can say FOR what is called “Coke” up here where LEGAL folk pay their OWN way.

Correlation does not equal causation.

I agree it is very possible that people who tend drink diet sodas tend to be people who are overweight and watching their weight.

I’ve weighed a lot and I’ve weighed a little but the one constant in my diet has been what some people claim is an excessive amount of Diet Pepsi.

I have found however that if I watch what I eat and move around a little, I tend to be smaller. It’s just not as much fun.

I only drink the 'real thing' - Coke in a glass bottle. None of the rest taste that good. Of course, my preferred drink is unsweet iced tea.

If I use a sweetner, I use sugar - no chemicals for me, thank you.

“You only drink diet coke if you are fat.”

I have noticed that too. It seems to be without exception.

The person fills his/her face with masses of food but has an order of diet coke on the side.

I've seen articles poster to FR about the artificial sweeteners in diet sodas being harder on the liver...And apparently if you drink diet sodas the chemicals in them target your "appetite centers" so drinking diet sodas makes a person hungrier than they would be if they drink other beverages...Anyhow, here's some earlier articles on diet sodas:

Yup. Like the diet coke is the thing that’s going to save them from piling on the pounds.

Everything is moderation. A conflicting report on this will be out next month...I’m sick of these so called researchers and their stupid findings. I don’t believe any of it anymore.....

Me too! I love Coke in the little bottle, especially at Christmastime with Santa on it.

In the book “Natural Cures They Don’t Want You To Know About,” the author says that diet drinks are known as liquid crack because of all the chemicals that are used. Also, Aspertame is an “autotoxin” like MSG. He also says that you’re better off drinking the real thing with sugar than the diet drink because diet drinks cause the body to hold on to fat.

I used to drink four cans of soda a day. For the past 8 months, it’s pretty much been H2O for me, and I’ve never felt better.

Sodas are poison, diet or regular.

If you can find anything with real sugar.... High Fructose Corn Syrup has replaced can sugar in nearly every soda and premade food anymore... I personally thing HFCS is responsible for all the health problems and obesity we are seeing more than anything else.

Its the single biggest dietary change that americans have undergone in the last few decades, its replaced real sugar in everything.

I drink Diet Coke and I'm not fat, just pleasingly plump.
