CANTON -- Hope Steffey's night began with a call to police for help. It ended with her face down, completely naked and sobbing on a jail cell floor. Steffey says Stark County sheriff's deputies used excessive force and assaulted her during a strip search 15 months ago, according to a federal lawsuit.

Officer Gurlea, McDonalds is hiring. I mean when you get out of jail.

Good measured post Hawken.

My gosh - if that happened as the article said, they girls should be suing for a lot more than $25,000.
That would depend on the persons, male or female, political leanings. Look at how she and Bubba are going after the 'black' candidate.
Let's not forget that the Patriot Act was the result of a devastating attack on our soil by Islamic terrorist.
Hillary would not need such an event to suspend constitutionally guaranteed rights. What does the IRS do if you don't pay your taxes? Seize your property and take away your freedom.
What will HillaryCare do if you don't pay into her system? Garnish your wages (she's already said that she will do this), seize your property and take away your freedom.
Frankly sport,
I can’t get into a rational debate until I bait the statist with a comment like I made in 180. The statists won’t argue with me because they can’t win. I have to bait them first... They always take the bait. haha
I read a column called "Fred on Everything" (fredoneverything.net). Fred is a pretty practical guy - as a reporter, he used to do ride alongs with the police in some fairly unsavory locations.
Fred's take on America's police force is that it more-or-less relies on a fairly law-abiding populace. His opinion is that our culture is fast reaching the tipping point where (to put it frankly) it's on the "less" side of law-abiding than the "more" side. Couple that with race-baiting pimps looking to eat cops for lunch, local govt's siding with the race-baiters, and large sections of the population actively hostile to the police, and a recipe for disaster is in the making.
I think that goes along with your opinion very well - the militarization of the police force is likely a reaction to this increased lawlessness.
When I was a kid, there were two things that I was taught about police officers - You could always rely them to help, and you didn't ever want to mess with them. Kids (and adults) today don't have that attitude anymore. I blame the anarchy of the 60s, and the folks from that generation that are in power - but that's a whole 'nother conversation.
I suppose that it's a rhetorical question, but I wonder how many FReepers have *really* had run-ins with (as they put it) "bad cops". I mean, we're talking violence, aggressive behavior, dishonesty, etc. Not - "I had a friend once who", or "This one A-hole pulled me over and gave me a ticket and NO WAY I DESERVED IT", or "I read this article where"...but an honest to God incident where they were accosted, shaken down, attacked, illegally detained, etc. My bet is "Not Very Many".
And if they didn't have enough women to restrain her? She gets a free pass? Perhaps tasering would be preferred?
Remind me to put you in the "I've never dealt with reality column". I find your jumping to conclusions based on the PLAINTIFF attorney's "Facts" pathetic as well, peanut.
Thank you for your response.
I’m afraid that your example is ridiculous. Ordering anyone to commit a murder would be an unlawful order and no policeman would need follow it. If he did, he would be arrested and charged with murder. I have never heard of an ordinance or law giving the political powers that be the authority to order the police to go out and shoot their opponents.
If you are going to try and denigrate me with the label of “statist” at least have the courtesy and backbone to ping me.
Now, show where I’m a statist or admit that you are a liar.
Regards
I can form an opinion, even an incorrect opinion that does not make me a liar. Once again I have made you angry. Sorry about that.
You know the old saying,”The truth hurts.”
Look out, now he will be angry at you too because you did not ping him!
Bump to read later - I am too sick to follow the conversation, even though I am interested.
bump for later viewing.q
Peeping Tom Cops! Those cops were clearly out of line! If I was her husband I’d %&*#@&%#$ those suckers!
She was charged with Disorderly Conduct, which in Ohio either means some sort of verbal or physical threat, or some sort of “alarming utterance” while drunk. She was also charged with Resisting Arrest.
The wrong ID didn’t enter into the charges, although it could have been a factor in the arresting officer’s mental processes.
She was convicted at a jury trial a few months later. I contacted the Alliance Municipal Court (where the trial was held) and inquired about a transcript. I was told that “it was a very long trial!”, and that at $1.65 a page, the transcript would run me $381.15. If someone would chip in with me, I’d get it and send copies to the contributors.
Male officers can legally strip a female inmate in every jurisdiction, PROVIDED that there is some sort of emergency which justifies their presence. For example, a big riot at a prison for women, where there simply aren’t enough female guards to strip search all the participants for weapons.
I believe that this doesn’t help the Stark County SD, since you can see five women in the cell on the video. The usual justification for this sort of “emergency” at the local level is that there simply are not enough (ususally only one or two) female officers to control an unruly female inmate, so one or more male officers are required to join in. You can see in the video that Steffey was not physically resisting the stripping, at least not to the point where 5 female officers couldn’t have controlled her.
