Dr. Dobson: I Will Never Vote for McCain
NewsMax ^ | February 1, 2008

Posted on 02/01/2008 2:07:00 PM PST by 2ndDivisionVet

While John McCain has risen to the top of the heap among contenders for the Republican presidential nomination, Focus on the Family founder James Dobson remains adamant that he will not support McCain’s bid for the White House.

Dobson, one of the nation’s most influential evangelical Christians, declared more than a year ago that he wouldn't support McCain under any circumstances, saying McCain didn't support traditional marriage values.

A Dobson spokesman told the New York Times’ David Kirkpatrick Wednesday that he stood by that position, and as a matter of conscience could never vote for the Arizona Senator.

According to the paper, Dobson is joined by a slew of other prominent conservatives who oppose McCain on a number of issues:

Talk radio host Mark Levin urged visitors to the National Review’s Web site to “rally for Romney” to ward off a McCain win, saying: “Conservatives need to act now, before it is too late.”

Talker Rush Limbaugh told listeners on Thursday: “McCain is in a lot of these places not actually the Republican candidate. He is the candidate of enough Republicans, but [also] independents and moderates and probably even some liberals.”

Pat Toomey, president of the anti-tax organization Club for Growth, said in comments reported by the New York Times: “I have yet to see McCain make any attempts to reach out to free market conservatives.”

Conservatives fault McCain for voting against President Bush’s tax cuts and a constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage, and for supporting embryonic stem cell research, looser immigration rules and stricter environmental regulations.

Conservatives were particularly irked when McCain made a deal with Democrats to break a deadlock on judicial nominations, according to the Times.

Anger over that compromise was rekindled this week when Wall Street Journal columnist John Fund wrote that McCain had privately criticized Bush’s Supreme Court nominee Samuel Alito because “he wore his conservatism on his sleeve.” The McCain campaign denied that report.

Following McCain successes in early primary states, however, other conservatives are beginning to warm up to his campaign:

Americans for Tax Reform President Grover Norquist, who previously opposed a McCain nomination, said: “He has moved in the right direction strongly and forcefully on taxes.”

Former McCain foe Tony Perkins, a prominent Christian conservative, told the Times: “I have no residual issue with John McCain,” adding the candidate needed to “better communicate” his stand on social issues.

Richard Land, an official with the South Baptist Convention, agreed, noting that McCain “is strongly pro-life.” He said: “When I hear Rush Limbaugh say that a McCain nomination would destroy the Republican Party, what I want to say to Rush is, ‘You need to get out of the studio more and talk to real people.’”

You’re going to hurt your tongue like that. Didn’t your mother talk to you about that? ;-)

Thanks. Take care.

Lie to yourself all you want about McCain. Kid yourself he can win and he would not be a disaster. Just don’t bother trying to lie to the rest of Freeper. We know who John McCain is politically. Wishy washy on the War, weak on Terrorism, ignorant on Economics. McCain 10% Conservatism doesn’t make up for his 90% Leftist political record.

Their is a very good reason McCain ranks 45th, out of 49 Republican Senators, on the American Conservative Union’s scoring chart.

I’ll either vote third party or sit it out.

You said it, brother!

Rush is a coward. He doesn’t hesitate to tell his audience what he thinks about anything, but he’s afraid to state unequivocally who he is voting for with only two front runners.

“His opinion is no longer influential.”

Dobson is true Christian, hope you are proud of yourself for slamming a true Christian. No wonder why this country is in trouble, people are so twisted. They can’t see the obvious and demonize good people. I got news for you, Hillary Clinton isn’t our only problem.

Who cares what he thinks?

I'm convinced that there are way to many people who are willing to have the Clinton's again if they can't get the person they want.

Those of you that feel that way could likely wreck the party and set this country back a long way.

I still come here every day because it is a good way to get a lot of news from one location.

What I don't come here for every day any more is enlightened discussion. Way to many have their own little world and are willing to take their ball and go home if they don't get the candidate they want. Since there is a sizable number of people who hate any given candidate I've concluded there could be no consensus here.

It makes me sad, but there's not a lot of people here these days that I would be willing to take their advice.

Let's see two quotes.

Yes, let's see lots of quotes, but, first, post a quote of mine where I even said that "Huckabee is against McCain."

If Ann Coulter said she will vote for Obama or something, I think I would get banned for putting my reaction in print.

Ann Coulter doessn't run my life or control my vote. And I can assure you if she has some idea about voting liberal democrat, she damn well doesn't have my respect.

I am not a McCain supporter but I am going to keep my head about this. We have a nation of people here to ptrotect, it's not a tiddly winks game.

The last time I checked Ann Coulter has never been elected to anything anywhere.

He has NO business using his position to slam OTHER people’s Christianity.

What’s sauce for the goose, and all that.

And what I said was really innocuous. Get a tougher skin.

BTW, I see that you are learning from your leader, RINO Romney, how to take things out of context and make it appear as though what you said is truthful.

FOFLOL! good grief.

I am a Conservative AND a Republican. I will likely bite the bullet and vote for McLAme. By 2010, I may be just a Conservative looking for a home.

Oh please, Rush Limbaugh is going to stir us all up and let Hilary get elected, but he can't endorse anyone? Turn his show into a 3 hour commercial for someone?? Come on, he has not even approached supporting anyone.

Rush is great, I enjoy his show, but I do not drink his kool aid. Why the heck should I care if he is a coward. the number one show, multi millionaire, an OPINION show, and you are going to tell me he is afraid to support anyone?

Absolute nonsense. Rush's show is pure opinion, it would be covered by any fairness doctrine. If he chooses not to support anyone he should be the last one to encourage me to let Hilary get elected.

If this is the best Rush Limbaugh and Ann Coulter can do - take their football home and show they can elect Hilary if we disappoint them - they can go straight to hell. That's my fairness doctrine.

I wonder if Dobson didn’t mouth off about Thompson, we would still have a Conservative in the race?

I doubt it. Thompson ran a half-hearted campaign and was clueless on how to rally social conservatives around him. Dobson alone didn't sink him.
