Thats the sum of it. If you cant bring yourself to vote for the offerings in your primary, or if the eventual nominee is somebody you cant stomach, dont sit out, and dont vote for the Democrat. Write in Fred Thompsons name.
Why?
By doing so, you send a message that cant be mistaken or spun. It is a message that says:
I am a Republican who wanted to vote for a conservative GOP candidate, but wasnt able to do so. I cant vote for a Democrat, but I cant vote for any of the Republicans, either. So Im writing in the name of the candidate I wish I could have voted for, because he is the kind of candidate I could support.
They have to learn that if they want conservative votes, they have to nominate candidates conservatives would want to vote for.
This strategy is the only one that offers any hope of changing the leftward move of the GOP in the future. Sitting out wont do it - they can spin the reasons why you sat out. Voting Democrat wont do it, they can spin it that the GOP candidates werent liberal enough. Even voting None of the Above wont do it, because that doesnt specify what you want instead of none of the above.
Im pretty sure that if this notion starts to get traction, Fred Thompson will publicly oppose it. Dont worry, and dont listen to him. This isnt really about Fred Thompson. Its about the future of the Republican party. Fred ran because he hoped to influence that, but he failed. Now its time for the rest of us to take a crack at it.
So remember: Just write in Fred Thompsons name when it comes time to cast your vote. (Theres nothing stopping you from writing it in for other offices, either).
And ignore all the squalling that you have to vote GOP because it is marginally less evil than the Democrats. Given the rate of decay were seeing now, even that wont be true (if it really is even now) in a couple more election cycles.
Incredibly stupid advice.
I remember everyone who sent a message by voting for Ross Perot. Hellooooo President Clinton....
“Incredibly stupid advice.”
Agreed. Supporting someone in the race is our right. Voting for someone who isn’t running any longer is just giving it to MCCAIN!!!!
Vote your conscience, because voting for ‘electibility’ is a proven failure.
I am planning on voting for Alan Keyes if he is no the ballot. If not I would write in Fred. U.S. Army Retired |
well the GOP is the stupid party so stupid advice is not a big surprise
As a Thompson supporter, I agree. No one remembers "messages" sent. What's remembered is who becomes president.
Possible short term pain for possible long term gain.
There is one good reason to write in Fred in a general election: it will enable you to make Ted Kennedy, Osama Obama (as Kennedy once called him), John Edwards, Soros, and all the other libs very happy.
Or you could stay home and sulk, which would have the same effect.
Do you even need to write in his last name, or just write “FRed”? They’ll know who we’re talking about, right?
yet for some strange reason kerry is not our president.
You’ll have to flesh that comment out for me.
long term gain for hillary chavez
I have a better idea. Vote for Mitt Romney and keep John McCain from getting the nomination.
Even if one was going to write in a candidate - why pick Fred Thompson? Write in “Ronald Reagan” if the intent is just a protest vote.
Romney, Rudy, McCain or Huck will make the libs happy too.
Incredibly stupid advice.Ditto.
Might as well write in “Hillary!”. Same results.
Bush wasn’t exactly the smartest person in the world or the most conservative but he was heaps better than any democrat and I’m glad that he’s in charge instead of Gore or Kerry.
