Now it can be told- The Thompson story

Back in March of 07 at the CPAC convention in DC several former Fred Thompson Congressional staffers told me Fred Thompson was thinking about a run. Some of his Tennessee cronies had been talking him up too.

I reported first that he was eyeing a White House bid. At the time several insiders told me OFF THE RECORD that it was largely a trial ballon to guage his popularity and float his name as a possible vice presidential nominee. I was sworn to silence.

See #68. Not too far fetched.

“Stalking Horse for McCain..”

I said the same thing weeks ago. I predict Fred will endorse his ol’ buddy from the Senate, John McCain. After all McCain-Feingold is more accurately McCain-Feingold-Thompson.

I doubt that Fred Thompson misled the public about his intentions because that would have been dishonest. If he should now ask his supporters to vote for John McCain, then I would have to conclude that those supporters do not know him as well as they think they do. However, I think that Fred is an honorable person and a good conservative and has done what he thinks is best for his family and supporters by stepping down from the presidential race. I appreciate Freds contribution to the national debate and wish him well for the future.

Probably. It seems the dims have youth on their side. Oh well, if we get one of them for 4 years, and pray the country survives 4 years of dim rule, then maybe it will shake up the Republicans and return the party to what it used to be. On a side note, Fred has enough money for plastic surgery. I always wondered why he never got those bags removed from under his eyes. They make him look so old and tired. I know he isn’t concerned with superficial things but those things seem to mean alot to voters when picking a president.

Fred would make a fine addition to the national ticket.

The problem would be,....

What does he bring to the ticket?

The Republican VP nominee would sensibly come from a swing state.

I think so.

Those insiders have now lifted the conditions on our conversations.

This is just too rich, if true.

Fred was a senator and that would be a good choice if the nominee were a governor ie, Romney.

Yes, that’s what ended up happening. The only way the Fred Followers will agree with that is if Fred endorses McCain.

The classy thing for Fred to do is to endorse Hunter, upholding all those conservative principles he supposedly held dear and encourage Hunter to get back into the race. It wouldn’t cost Fred anything because it wouldn’t likely result in much, and any future VP slot wouldn’t really be forfeited.

I hope you are correct.

I can imagine his family at the VP residence ... even better than the White House. Smaller microscope!

I had thought a young family in the White House would be a real treat for the nation.

If Fred Thompson endorses John McCain, would that not be a repudiation of the conservatives who were backing him? Surely those conservative voters would not go for liberal McCain after being snookered by their ideal candidate. I would think that such a scenerio would hurt McCain not only with conservtives but with Republicans in general.

IMHO McCain would prefer a McCain\Kennedy ticket better.

“Sounds like Fred was more popular than anyone imagined, but he had no staff or structure set up to capitalize, sounds about like what it looks like to me.”

Agreed, early organized campaigning at the time the other candidates were starting could only have raised his profile (and numbers).

If anything, it clearly illustrates that if you don’t start as early as your competitors, you lose in the media age of politics.

We need Fred to keep a short leash on the RINOs!

There is a silver lining here. If someone grabs Mitt as VP, then he would be in the Senate to clean that mess up over there.

Short of that happening, I’m voting for Ron Paul. The rest of the GOP can bite me.
