McLean, VA - Senator Fred Thompson today issued the following statement about his campaign for President:
"Today I have withdrawn my candidacy for President of the United States. I hope that my country and my party have benefited from our having made this effort. Jeri and I will always be grateful for the encouragement and friendship of so many wonderful people."
I supported Fred from the Beginning, but for along time now I could tell he just didn’t want it enough. I feel he let himself be talked into something he really didn’t want to do. I wouldn’t be surprised to see a McCain/Thompson ticket though, which would lead to more questions.
And listening, I initially thought, 'why bother', and Rush hesitated for a moment, and said, "Well I thought it was out there, but now that you bring it up...we'll put it on the website."
And in reality, nothing brings it home like that vid. This animated gif bears reposting again and again and again...
From the apparent CINO candidates supported here by long time FReepers, “born-on” dating has become a meaningless measure.
You guys have nothing to be ashamed of. You're both great assets to conservatism and FR.
That was a wonderful post that helps put a bit of light into a dark and disillusioning day. Thank you!
But thanks for the over-reaction.
No, he specifically said he would "stay home".
Anyone who stays home on election day screws conservatives at the local and state level. Its a stupid, selfish thing to do.
If you can't vote for Romney/Huck/Rudy/McCain, then write someone in, but don't give the Dims your state legislature and city council just because you don't like how the presidential primary turned out.
Thanks for the kind words. :-)
We are only doomed if we roll over, play dead and give way to apathy. To let the Dems take over dooms us all. We may not get everything we want in a candidate, but when do we get everything we want? If we don't like something later on, we speak up...LOUDLY! It worked for the immigration issue, it should work later on as well. We have a big voice if we really apply ourselves.
Staying home won't cut it.
I will write in Fred at the primary level.
Obama and Rudy disgusts me the least, as they are honest liberals.
Romney, McCain, and Hillary disgust me equally as they are all pathetic fakes.
Being a Texas, my vote means little but as a message.
I am, however, a person formerly used by the RNC for things like free planes rides, office space, etc. No more. No help.
Lech hapess me yenanea otcha.
(1/22) With FRed dropping out, who do you now support for the Republican nomination?
Mike Huckabee
Rudy Giuliani
John McCain
Mitt Romney
None of the above
Anyone but Rudy
Anyone but Mac
Anyone but Mitt
Anyone but Huck
Staying home
I chose non of the above. I'll just sit back and watch the Battle of The Rinos.
Don’t worry sonny, I feel no reason to post much anymore. Maybe occasionally but not about the election much.
I like your take on free speech though enjoy it under the social regime you guys help usher in.
There is no way that any conservative judges will be confirmed with democrat majorities in Congress and a RINO in the WH.
They will cut deals and be laughing at the conservatives.
McCain laughs at conservatives now and Romney will do the same once he has their votes sewn up.
Any conservative who votes for the GOP this time around is only exacerbating the problem.
The national party needs to be fumigated.
Thank you for your tireless work keeping us all updated...
G-d bless Fred and his family. Prayers for all they are going through right now.
I would love to see him as a VP — there’s still a chance that may happen! I heard on the other thread Romney said he would make great VP material...
Thanks, Politicalmom, for all of your pings.
I am devasted. I feel like I’m lost right now.
We love you, too!

Please don’t hold anything against other FReepers. It’s called political fervor. Many get carried away.
As much as you were for your candidate, they were for theirs.
Politics sometimes get REAL ugly but, in the end, we still all have to live together. Love thy fellow FReeper. (despite their faults)
Major bummer - do my donations get refunded then?
On another note, what I’m finding interesting is that 3 tried and true Dem voters that I’ve talked to are not comfortable voting for Obama or Hillary in the general - 1 likes McPain the other 2 like Romney...
I’m still worried about a 3rd party coming in and giving this thing to the worst nightmare I can imagine - Hilde/Obama.
Right again, Resolute! Avacado, Resolute is correct, and I know this because I already took the path you now recommend. I took it California with Arnold Schwarzenegger over McClintock and then Cruz Bustamonte, and it was a hard lesson. Sadly, it is one that has soared over the heads of Republicans like you. Maybe you're just young and need another decade or two to figure things out. I used to think like you ... I finally wised up. When are you going to wise up and do the HARD right thing, instead of the easy middle-of-the-road long-term wrong thing that looks right but more importantly, makes you feel good? Just as it made me feel good to vote for Arnold instead of "letting" Bustamonte win?
If I had it to do over again, I'd let Bustamonte win; short term would have been very painful, long term would have been unpleasant but good medicine for the health of the Republican party. Instead, I fell for the fallacies you fall for now, and ended up hurting Republicans far more than if I'd voted out of confident principle instead of FEAR-based compromise.
