M.L. King ally says U.S. holiday an insult

DALLAS, Jan. 21 (UPI) -- A Dallas minister who marched with civil rights leader the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., said Monday's birthday observance holiday is an insult to his legacy.

The Rev. Peter Johnson, 62, director of the Texas operations for the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, told The Dallas Morning News the holiday should be on April 4, the anniversary of the date King was assassinated.

"We have ignored the essence of his life and the horror of his death," said Johnson. "We've allowed white America to escape the guilt of his assassination and we've allowed black America to drift back into a coma."

Johnson said King is considered a martyr by many but said, if he were alive, he would be considered an agitator by many people, the newspaper said.

"We remember him with parades and galas and banquets, things that are really irrelevant and silly regarding Dr. King's legacy," he said. "If we really want to honor Dr. King, we should do something about people who live under bridges. That would be a great tribute."

He’s playing the race card AGAIN. Wonder why he suppoeted keeping the FBI files on MLK secret for 50 years? What is he hiding from us?

You are so right. And unfortunately many Americans of all "colors" never did get Mr. Kings point.

There is little doubt in my mind that based upon Mr. Kings "I have a dream speech", he looked forward to the day when all people would be judged not by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.

That is an excellent dream. Unfortunately there are still many people of "all colors" that work assiduously to quell that "dream"! And this good "Dr" seems to be one as well.

"White Guilt!" - Total BS.

I agree. Killing MLK was a terrible thing. He did not deserve such a fate. But, he also did not deserve a national holiday in his honor, a national holiday garnted no other American person. No longer is there a Washington Day, or Lincoln day; no, they have been jumbled together in a Presideent’s day. MLK is the only person who has a national holiday all to himself.

Plenty of saints weren’t saints. I have no trouble honoring the man for what good he did.

The pastor is an idiot.

We don’t celebrate the fact that MLK was murdered, but that he lived.

Truly a man playing without a full deck.

Washington does...Lincoln does not. In the United States Code, the third Monday in February is recorded as “George Washington’s Birthday,” although in the culture, it’s “Presidents’ Day.”

It’s not only the unsuitability of a special day for this one person, but that he was not a great national leader working on behalf of the country. Yes, his cause was good, his purpose was noble, but he was the leader of a movement for a particular group, not someone leading the entire nation, such as a president, or advancing culture for all humanity, like a scientist or great writer. Hence the easy misunderstanding by a foreigner that this is “black day” - it’s obvious it’s really a concession to a political or racial cause, not a true honor for someone who did great things for America. That’s why it’s really an insult to Mr. King after all, because it’s so obviously trumped up.

Yes. MLK was human. Golly gee! But, seriously, I imagine he would have a few choice words for these idiots if he was alive today.

... we should do something about people who live under bridges

The typical Soviet Socialist / Clinton / Obama solution would be to ship them all off to work camps.

I guess people like ‘Reverend’ JACKS-nnnn and ‘Reverend’ Sharpton got to be ‘reverends’ kind of like Mike Vick isn’t really to blame for killing dogs?

“If we really want to honor Dr. King, we should do something about people who live under bridges. That would be a great tribute.”

Well, just keep on voting for the white hypocrat that tells you he’s the first black president!

IN FACT, just keep voting hypocrat in all elections as you’ve been doing for the past 40-50 years when they promise to actually DO something about poor blacks...

just contimue to ignore that their promises have yet to materialize, after some 40+ years of chances...

now THAT will bring about the much talked about “change”!

How about “Black Guilt” for all the crimes (murder, rape, robberies) committed against Blacks, Whites, Hispanics and Asians? No remorse?
