PORTLAND, Maine - Temperatures dropped to breathtaking levels, well below zero, in extreme northern sections of Maine early Monday.
Thermometers registered 34 degrees Fahrenheit below zero at Van Buren, 27 below at Presque Isle and 26 below at Allagash, the National Weather Service reported.
In the northern Rockies, Butte, Mont., registered 32 below at 8 a.m. with a wind chill of minus 47, the weather service said.
Another of the nation's usual cold spots, International Falls, Minn., ...

Now live a bit south of Bangor - but grew up north of there - with grandparents - Grampa a Maine Guide...wonderful childhood on a little farm deep in the woods = no electricity = (no electric bill, no oil bill, no water bill, no garbage fee, no mortgage (farmhouse built about 1848 by great grandfather - produced 95% of food, traded butter, etc, for dry goods. )
Hard work? Yes. But more free time than folk have today working to pay for all the things we produced ourselves. And the best part: We owned our lives and the hours of our days.
Question: Which candidate did not raise his hand when asked if he believed in climate change?

HA-HA! It’s in the 30’s around Fairbanks! Seriously though, this is normal winter weather. What is saint algore going to do?
The good news here is that Algore and his minions have long since flown to warmer climes, where their ‘message’ might not be laughed at directly. :)
It's really weird driving your car in the morning . . . the tires make a thump-thump-thump sound for the first few miles -- from being frozen somewhat flat on one side all night long.
Stock Show is in Denver and that means it is freezing.
Is Al still in Bali ?
Here in Wyoming, I once stood in -40°F to wait for the school bus. It didn't get above 0° for two weeks.
Once it's less than about -10°F, the cold just hurts more. I don't even register it as "colder", only more painful.
I would probably eat myself to death if I had to live through that.
Oswego County NY after getting hit with lake effect this weekend due to the Arctic cold front.
Squeeze...yes, indeed!
LOL
Yep. 'Familiar with that. And having to jump out of the car and slam the door FAST, hoping it hasn't frozen so's it won't close. Have to carry a spray bottle of alcohol in case.
But thank goodness we don't get the wide-open winds as much as up your way in the Canadian plains.
Have a friend in Texas - gets cold there too, as he says: "The only thing between us and Canada is a barbed wire fence in Kansas - and it's down half the time."
Great photo! "One picture is worth...." (my cat won't even stick her nose out the door)
Hey everybody, metmom's doggy photo needs a cut line!

That's assuming you can get into your car. I've had a few mornings lately with temps around +3 F and doors that would not open on my F-150. I deiced the windshield before trying to drive my son to work. That lasted about 200 yards into a 2.5 mile trip. The deicing windshield washer fluid froze instantly on the windshield. A bottle of spray-on decing fluid worked well enough to continue the trip. The other unpleasant part of the trip was a frozen throttle cable. The truck backed out of the driveway just fine in reverse with the engine idling. I put in in drive and the gas pedal wouldn't move. I had to stand on it to get it to move at all.
We're having a heat wave this afternoon. The temperature is all the way up to +10 F. It is supposed to drop to -6 F this evening.
Not my pets. It’s from this link:

Our old stomping grounds, thank God. I’ve lived through enough events like that to last me a lifetime. The last winter we were there, it snowed like that two weekends in a row; got 11 FEET in Jan alone.
This lake effect event (as it’s called) is a direct result of the bitter cold. The larger the difference between the the lake temps and air temp, the greater the lake effect snowfall.
NY gets nailed ping.
“The fire hydrant is out there somewhere.”
You can see in the snow at the bottom of the steps where the animals tried to get out.
