Thermometers registered 34 degrees Fahrenheit below zero at Van Buren, 27 below at Presque Isle and 26 below at Allagash, the National Weather Service reported.

In the northern Rockies, Butte, Mont., registered 32 below at 8 a.m. — with a wind chill of minus 47, the weather service said.

LOL!

In our family, our definition of “cold” can be revealed by standing outside while you sniff in the air.

If your nostrils stick - then it’s cold.

Question: Which candidate did not raise his hand when asked if he believed in “climate change?”

And...all the others started to raise their hands.

No global warming for you...

Must be because of all the fun we Mainiacs poked at Gore back in the 100-year Ice Storm of 1998 - when he came up for a photo-op = standing in the middle of the road with one end of broken power line in each hand!

The papers put a warning in the cut line: "Do Not do this. It is very dangerous" ... the rest of the sentence that echoed in everyones head was: "...and very stupid." (All I could think of when I saw the photo was: "Quick, someone. Flip the switch!")

He must have crossed Maine of the list of global warming then. Just dang. I've been counting on it.

Ah yes, good to hear once again, that I made the right decision in moving South. Suddenly 20s and 30s doesn't sound so bad any more.

I miss Maine sometimes. But not in January.

You're kidding. Surprised that his Secret Service Detail let him get away with that much stupidity. Unless they had an agenda in mind. :-)

We're in Missouri, and we've seen -30 degrees real temperature twice since we've been here (over a span of 30 years). It's not pleasant - thank God for our wood stoves when the power goes out.

If your nostrils stick - then it’s cold.

Ever try taking a cup of water and making a sweep of it across the air - it turns to sparkling crystals before hitting the ground.

You can also gage the temp by the different sounds the snow makes when you walk.

And I do love to go snowshoeing through the woods in a good Stalking Moon -

There are ways to squeeze enjoyment out of winter - just need to learn what and when - especially when to hunker down by the wood stove...

I'm thinking, come the cold, snow snap in Feb, I'll nestle into my featherbed and set the alarm for mid-April

LOL

Considering the well-placed disdain they had for that whole administration, just maybe...

I’ve never tried the cup of water trick!
I’ll have to see if it’s cold enough for that today.

You’re right about the snow - it takes on an extra crunchiness.

LOL!

Yesterday when the “arctic blast” first arrived - the kiddies were sniffing and saying “nope! it isn’t cold yet!”

You’re right about the snow - it takes on an extra crunchiness.

And that crushed diamonds bounce-lit by the sun -

Then there's the nights after it's snowed - then a bit of rain that freezes to form a crust - makes living paintings at night, with the soft orange glow of the lights spilling out of farmhouse windows and flowing across the mirror-fields

North of Bangor it registered -18 this morning. Sun came out, squirrel came to eat, turkeys came to scrounge. Life goes on. Good thing this snow doesn’t drift and good thing not much wind this morning. Life is good.

Hey, all you guys - Thanks for the repartee - your posts reminded me of lots of reasons we Mainiacs 'put up with' winter here.

And now I have enough for my column - it's the far end of my deadline window and I can picture my editor watching for my email -

so I'm off to pull it together -
