Obama Rally at Catholic College ‘Irresponsible’
cardinal newman society ^ | 1/14/2008 | Patrick J. Reilly

On Wednesday, January 9th, pro-abortion Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama addressed a large crowd at Saint Peter’s College, a Jesuit Catholic institution in Jersey City, N.J., generating considerable media attention to his campaign.

“It’s irresponsible for a Catholic college and its leadership to host a political rally for an aggressively pro-abortion candidate,” said Patrick J. Reilly, president of the Cardinal Newman Society. “Such events curry public attention at the expense of public morality. In so doing, they demonstrate reckless disregard for the most vulnerable human lives and contribute to the general decline of Catholic higher education.”

The president of Saint Peter’s College, Dr. Eugene J. Cornacchia, endorsed the event in a prior press release, welcoming Obama “as we would welcome any presidential candidate who wishes to discuss and debate the ideas and events that are shaping our history.” The college worked cooperatively with the Obama campaign to provide links for media registration and public participation. According to the Obama campaign website, 1,074 individuals registered for the event as a result of the Saint Peter’s College link.

The Cardinal Newman Society has protested similar events in the past, citing the U.S. bishops’ 2004 mandate that Catholic institutions should refuse speaking platforms and honors for abortion advocates. Obama supports Roe v. Wade, partial-birth abortion and embryonic stem cell research. He has voted against parental notification and for increased contraceptive funding for teenagers.

“As the 2008 political campaigns intensify, the Cardinal Newman Society calls on all Catholic colleges and universities to remain true to their Catholic identity and principles and reject any manipulation by politicians who work against these principles,” he said. “A college or university is dedicated to seeking and teaching truth, and a Catholic university embraces the truths of the Catholic faith.”

Saint Peter’s College honored Judge Reginald Stanton of the New Jersey Superior Court as its commencement speaker in 2003. During his judicial career, Stanton reached beyond his judicial obligations to publicly advocate abortion rights and assisted suicide by starvation.

To add to the festive nature of the Obama rally, the choir of Saint Dominic Academy performed, wearing their distinctive school uniforms.  Saint Dominic Academy is a girls' Catholic high school in Jersey City. A photo of the choir and 38 other photos of the event are on the college's website.

It’s like inviting a child molester to babysit your children.

Strange that so many are unaware that if Democrats had their way, there would be no Catholic schools, or so it appears. “Separation of church and state” has been taken out of context to such a degree by Demorats (or so it appears), that it’s now supposed to mean “separation of religion and country”, in almost communist fashion. “Separation of church and state”, that is, as taken out of context from a Jefferson speech, not the constitution.

I bet he didn’t mention “a woman's right to choose.”

At fundrace.org when I searched by occupation, the Priests who donated to Obama’s campaign are in NJ, with the exception of one in Alabama, IIRC.

One of the visitors to the Obama File submitted the following: The racist New Black Panther Party endorses Barack Hussein Obama

He also pointed me to the 15 videos on Trinity United Church of Christ About page.

You can access them by starting video #1 (double-click) and then clicking the Menu button on the player after it has started. The 2nd video is truly disturbing.

This information is also at the end of The Obama File

Unfortunately the Jesuits have always considered what the world thought of them very important. Obama was a prime mover of an Ill state bill to allow the murder of “defective” babies up to 48 hours after birth. I’ll bet THAT fact did not come up at St. Peter’s.

I had Mary Higgins Clark and Lena Horne.

I wonder if St. Pete's ever hosted the Vagina Monologues like Boston College did a few years back.

The Society of Jesus is rapidly becoming an offense to faithful Catholics, in my opinion.

As a graduate of a Jesuit college and parent who paid for one child (of 4) through that same university, I would never again pay to send any child through that university. I refuse to send them any more money or attend their functions.

It’s a Jebbie college, so I’m not surprised.

Very few boys from St. Peter’s Prep went to St. Peter’s College. It just wasn’t considered prestigious enough. This despite both being Jesuit schools. I of course, went to the former!

I’m bummed to see the St. Dominic’s girls performing there.

Back in the day, St. Dom’s girls were da bomb!

I emailed Archbishop Myers before Obama's visit to St. Peter's and have not received a response.

Mother Angelica said a long time ago that not all Catholic colleges practice Catholic teachings. If she were healthy now, I’d like to hear what she would say about this.

When I contact the college, I will send them this:

“Obama has spent a scant two years in the Senate but served eight years at the Illinois capitol in Springfield.

During that time, Obama voted AGAINST (emphasis mine) a bill that received national attention and would protect babies born alive after botched abortions.”

___________

I got bad news for you but I attended Catholic schools for most of my pre- college education and the to that I attended were VERY liberal- damned near socialist. The only thing nearly conservative about them were no abortion and no premarital sex and once we hit High School the No pre-marital sex thing fell quickly on deaf ears.
