NUEVO LAREDO, Mexico (Reuters) - At a Catholic-run shelter just across the border from Laredo, Texas, dozens of Latin American migrants say grace and tuck into a hearty meal of sausages, beans and rice, before trying to swim across the Rio Grande into the United States.
Weary migrants on their journey north often recharge their batteries at a network of similar shelters run by the Roman Catholic Church -- a lifeline sanctioned by the Vatican, despite increased U.S. efforts to keep out illegal immigrants.
"Migration is a human right and migrants are some of the world's most vulnerable people. It is the church's obligation to help them," said the Rev. Francisco Pellizzari, an Italian-Argentine missionary who runs the Nazareth migrant shelter in Nuevo Laredo.

Well the United States has been the (undeclared) enemy of the Church off-and-on since it’s founding. It’s an odd situation really... and most priests and politicians are completely unaware of the conflict between their mutually exclusive goals. Or they ignore it as a side-effect of modern secular society. If you want to see just how opposed the two institution are at heart you should read Pius IX’s Syllabus of Errors. Of course sometimes the two institutions have worked together, but this was primarily a self serving alliance on the part of the US; which will either become more Catholic in the future, and have to change much of its secular premises; or it will become less Catholic and hence even more the enemy to Church.
No Amish either.
No Bhuddists, Shintoists or even Baptists. Isn't the Huckster a Baptist preacher that told us we all had a Christian obligation to subsidize our own colonization?
mom..You’re right of course..I just wanted to start out by broadly showing how one nation accepted another group of people from another nation and then narrowing that down to the other points i tried to make..
Thank you...btw..i like your posts..many good observations
Thanks. :)
Don’t throw around the term “Communist” like the Left throws around “fascist” and “Nazi,” particularly when Communism and Catholicism were/are such staunch enemies.
Then we'd see just how much of their motivation is based in principal.
As for the Church selling off its priceless artwork and such, I refer you to what Jesus said to Judas Iscariot when He was anointed with an expensive fragrance and Judas wanted the fragrance sold so the proceeds could go to the poor.
I can’t believe that people here are actually believing this about the Catholic Church.
Misleading article.
Come on folks — Reuters???????
btt
Yeah, most people here would be skeptical with a Reuters article, but since it's about the Catholic Church, some automatically assume it to be accurate. They're either inconsistent, hypocrites, or both.
There are homosexuals everywhere. Just because a few priests made mistakes does not mean the whole church is corrupt.
Just because a few teachers abuse children sexually does not mean that all teachers are pedophiles.
Where is you thinking? I’m puzzled. Why do you say this?
“Is it the RCCs role to do what the US Government should be doing?..That is- speaking from Washington DC and telling the Central American nations to do a better job with their people, and vigorously protesting Mexican treatment of our US Nationals held in Mexican jails, or held as hostages?.”
In this case “yes” the actions of the people in the RCC are based on a moral opposition, or more hopefully, the desire to see the poor improving their lives.
It makes little difference if the US border is the “problem” or if the Mexican Govt’s awful treatment of immigrants on their way to the US.
Don’t forget, the RCC is the focus of the discussion, specifically their actions vis a vis illegals coming into america with their help.
“The RCC is not responsible for affairs of State..it is responsible for the care of souls..and broken bodies..it is called compassion. This makes it difficult for US Catholics because we are so close to Mexico..The US Government needs to pass a comprehensive immigration bill to stop the flow of illegal immigrants and criminals into the US. That is Congress job and the Presidents duty to sign a bill into law..It is not the RCCs fault if this is not happening...”
I would say nothing could put the RCC in more jeopardy over this then relying on the US Govt to “pass” a law.
I find it refreshing that the RCC is willing to help the poor, what is less then thrilling is the fact that they criticize the very country that they are exporting people into....
Jesus told us to feed the poor. He also told us to render unto Caesar.... It is admirable to feed the poor. It is despicable to break the law in doing so! Shame on the catholic hierarchy!
You would have to do it by a parish-to-parish or a diocese-by-diocese basis. Also, you would have to consistent and go after the denomination and religions that aid illegals. Otherwise, there would be an unequal enforcement of the law.
Unless you have completed stacks of paperwork and gone through formal hearings you are still a member of the Catholic Church.
Find a priest that you can sit down and talk with and get your questions answered.
I invite you back at any time. We will welcome you with open arms. After all, the first person into heaven after Christ, was a thief................something to think about. The church is for sinners, not for those who judge themselves above sin. Christ is here for all of us.
What does the Pope mean “...by a serious commitment to a fair distribution of wealth...”?
Would calling him our Socialist Pope suit you better?
And you are believing Reuters? I don’t think so.
I don’t know. Ask him. I don’t speak for the Pope. Don’t be so willing to assume, or rely on Reuters.
Catholicism and Christianity in general = Communism with a God. All organized religions are collectivist enterprises No different than communist or socialist parties.
The Italian bishops took a strong turn against illegals when Muslims started showing up, and they specifically spoke against the Muslim character of the illegals. Try and find one priest or bishop that does anything but bend over backward for illegal Mexicans/Central Americans, and your search will be for naught...
