Sure...just ask President Howard Dean how it went.
I am supporting Romney as the best candidate with the financial resources to go the distance in November. He can unify all three branches of the party — economic conservatives, foreign policy conservatives, and social conservatives. He would also be exceptional in a debate setting against either Obama or Clinton. And, on economic matters, he’d be an exceptional president.
So, given the glee on this thread that Romney lost in NH last night, would someone please explain to me what is lacking in the following logic:
1. McCain wins Michigan next week due to independent crossovers; there is no Democratic race.
2. McCain then goes to SC with a tremendous head of steam and can garner 32% or so of the vote. Who is going to stop McCain in SC? In 2000, we had the luxury of Bush going head-to-head against McCain. That is not true this year; the only possible beneficiary of a conservative split in SC is Huckabee. So, in SC it’s McCain with 32%, Thompson and Huckabee each with 25%, the rest scattered.
3. So, if McCain wins both Michigan and SC, who in the Hell thinks he can be stopped in Florida and beyond? Thompson will not make it; so do the Romney haters want Huckabee or McCain? Please let me know.
4. Did anyone watch the McCain victory speech last night? It was the worst speech I’ve ever seen given in modern politics. Can you imagine the disaster of the debates this fall when this old man with a turkey neck, exhausted by the campaign, loses his temper against Hillary?
>>His first two big tests and he lost both.
Well, he won Wyoming and that brought him more delegates than the others and he sits in first place as of today. But the impression is that Iowa and NH are more important (despite actual delegate count).
>Proof that money isnt everything.
Thankfully. However, in this case at least it is HIS money. I’d rather have a self-funded candidate than one who needs to pay others back.
>Huckabee with little cash took down the money man
He did, but he won’t have that 60% evangelical base through Super Tuesday (capturing just under 1/2 of it). And Huckabee turns off independents. He’ll lose a general election.
>and McCain did the same last night.
That he did. And he proved that independents will favor him over Romney (at least NE ones). Question is whether it’s enough to pull independents from Clinton/Obama.
Thompson will endorse McCain after SC, not Romney. They are old friends. Wish you were correct and that Fred would endorse Romney, but that ain’t gonna happen.
I’m hoping that Fred will get some traction still.
But he should have done better considering the debates, even without an active campaign.
Will take your advice and hope for the best.
There is a difference
McCain has not lied or distorted his positions to get elected, he did not ‘evolve’ when teh scope hoe his potential voter pool changed..
McCain is not by any means my favorite but I would vote for him in the General over any dem, the same can not be said for romney..
Fred needs to convince people that Fred wants it. I think that, stem to stern, Fred is the best the Pubbies have to offer.
I hope he wins SC or I suspect he will bow out. If he does, there’ll be a third party for sure (”for sure” = this morning’s best guess). All the others have too much baggage.
The sad thing is with Thompson is that if he had entered much earlier - he would almost certainly have been the candidate.
I think that is a great shame. The whole will he/won’t he and then the wait for the inevatable detracted from what would have been his push to the top of the polls.
Whoever was calling the shots on his behalf really is an absolute disgrace.
(and for the record, I am not personally backing Fred although I would have had absolutely no problem supporting him should he win the nomination although I think it is highly unlikely now).
The first one to drop out would be Rudy if he doesn't make a strong showing in FL and a couple of the big states. I think he would go, at this point, before Mitt. My churning stomach tells me it is going to be a battle between McCain and Huck. I do think McCain can win a general election. I think Huck would be Dukakis/Mondale.
Only a week if we’re lucky.
McCain switched his position on amnesty when he realized that American voters weren’t buying it. He’s guilty of the same offenses as Romney. That’s why I’m supporting Fred Thompson over both of them.
Give me the competent, impressive guy, Romney over McShamnesty any day.
There has been nothing competent about Mitt Romney’s campaign so far. He’s had one good debate appearance on Fox, and several very poor ones. Every week he trots out a new “persona”.
I heard about the Huckster’s plan for illegals just yesterday. Supreme Court challenge to the Constitution. Makes sense to me. (But I don’t think he has a prayer.)
Of course we all want Fred. But we’re gonna be stuck with McCain, b/c Huckabee is even more unacceptable — and would be an absolute Goldwater-style disaster in November.
Huckabee’s vote in every state is a vote that otherwise would mostly go to Romney. Huck is destroying Romney and any likelihood of a GOP nominee who can hold the 3 GOP components together - economic, social, defense.
Thanks again, Iowa, for giving us John McCain as the GOP nominee.
If you see or hear any Michigan polling data, please advise.
Once again, Huckabee will siphon enough votes in Michigan to destroy Romney and put McCain one step closer to the GOP nomination.
You need to research Romney Care, that will turn into Hillary Care. They are the same except sex. Both are socialist.
You want to see Romney outspend Hillary and Obama 20 to 1 (that's likely $20 BILLION) -- and still lose by six points?
Because that's his performance so far.
They both love illegal immigrants more than Americans.
Music to my ears!
