"They (the patrol) were attacked by gunmen and the soldier abused the situation and killed the two soldiers. The soldier was an insurgent infiltrator," Khazraji said. "He was immediately arrested by the Iraqi Army and we are conducting interrogations."

Typical dirty, cowardly tricks by AQ types. They should torture him to get what ever info they can from him and then hang the bas... for treason!

IMO we are very fortunate that this has not been happening with regularity.

Update -

BAGHDAD, Jan 5 (Reuters) - An Iraqi soldier opened fire on U.S. troops during a joint patrol in the northern city of Mosul on Dec. 26, killing two and wounding three others along with a civilian interpreter, Iraqi and U.S. officials said on Saturday.

U.S. military spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel James Hutton said it was not clear why the Iraqi soldier had opened fire, but two Iraqi generals told Reuters the attacker had links to Sunni Arab insurgent groups and had been detained.

"The incident occurred as U.S. and Iraqi army soldiers were conducting operations to establish a combat outpost," he said.

It is believed to be the first reported incident in which an Iraqi soldier has deliberately killed a U.S. serviceman.

IMO, the enemy has infiltrated our military. Hopefully it is a rare event and will be dealt with decisively. But what about the enemy within that continues to get us to destroy our own as is the case with the Haditha marines? When are we going to sort that out, provide restitution and apologize to our servicemen, and put into orange jumpsuits the enemy within for sedition?

Waiting for a statement from Murtha saying that the AQ types were simply defending themselves from cold blooded murder by the evil American military...or something like that.

If we can't trust the Iraqi military then how can we expect them to take over the fight for their own country?

We have to trust the "trustworthy Iraqi military," and find a way to identify and get rid of the infiltrators. This is not a new problem for our capable military.

I recall that the night before the invasion of Iraq in 2003, an American muslim soldier killed a Major and Captain in the 101st Airborne Division when he threw a handgernade in their tent. The enemy is Islam, regardless of the nationality of the individual.

Thank you...Maybe now the Marine Corps will reopen these two cases and have another look at the evidence..Our guys are being shot and stabbed in the back by these Iraqi bums and then are court-martialed for defending themselves..Yes, they are prosecuted for politically correct reasons...

The Corps can take the UCMJ and stuff it if they are going to turn it into a PC manual..Same with the other services..We have been trying to tell them that for a long time because of the trials of our Haditha Marines...

BBC NEWS
Iraqi soldier ‘killed US troops’
An Iraqi soldier has opened fire on American troops, killing two and wounding three others, US and Iraqi officials have said.

The incident happened during a joint patrol in the north on 26 December, but fuller details have only now emerged.

An Iraqi general said the patrol had come under fire from gunmen in the city of Mosul, but his soldier had “abused” the situation and shot the Americans.

It is thought to be the first such case since the US-led invasion of 2003.

The shooting was deliberate, it was not an accident
Noor al-Din Hussein
Iraqi general

The US initially reported the deaths of Capt Rowdy Inman, 38, and Sgt Benjamin Portell, 27, as resulting from hostile small arms fire.

But Iraqi general Mutaa al-Khazraji said: “They [the joint patrol] were attacked by gunmen and the [Iraqi] soldier abused the situation and killed the two soldiers.”

He said the Iraqi serviceman had been “an insurgent infiltrator”. He was arrested and is being questioned.

An interpreter was also wounded alongside the three other soldiers.

Tensions remain high in Mosul - an ethnically mixed area that is home to a variety of Muslim and Christian communities.
