WEAPONS OF CHOICE Shopper pulls gun, stops robbery cold Held suspect at grocery store until police officers arrived

A grocery store customer in Indianapolis is being credited with halting an armed robbery by pulling his own weapon and pointing it at the assailant until police arrived.

According to a report in the Indianapolis Star, Charlie Merrell, 51, was in a checkout line at a grocery store called Bucks IGA on the city's south side when a "masked man jumped a nearby counter and held a gun on a store employee."

The police report cited by the newspaper said the incident happened at 5:17 in the afternoon Monday as Merrell was doing some year-end shopping.

"While the suspect was demanding cash from the workers," according to the police report, "Merrell pulled his own handgun, pointed it at the robber and ordered him to put down his weapon."

“Dwain”

from THE BOOK OF BABY NAMES...
“High likelyhood that this name will be found on a police blotter in later years.”

If I was carrying, I’d always have the chamber loaded, with a full mag behind it. I’m a small guy so a 1911 is too big for me to carry concealed. I’ve also heard that you have to have the hammer cocked on one to fire it quick.

The proper carry condition of your weapon depends on its design and safety features. A model 1911 .45ACP should (IMHO) be carried only locked and loaded, for reasons of both safety and reliability. Other types of handguns are designed to be carried safely with a chambered round but decocked with the firing pin rotated away from the hammer.
Bottom line: if you’re going to carry, you need to know your weapon and practice frequently.

This line gets me....

Police reported Merrell had a valid permit to carry the handgun, and they recovered an unloaded .380-caliber handgun and $779 cash from the suspect.

A robber with SOME common sense. He had an UNLOADED WEAPON and knew that he couldn't have a shoot out with an armed citizen.

I carry a Taurus PT92AF... same model we carry in the Air Force (theirs is a Barretta, mine is a Taurus) and I keep the mag loaded with 15, and one in the chamber. I keep two more mags handy when I have the weapon on me (never know when it might turn into a Bruce Willis movie you know! LOL! J/K)

I do NOT keep the hammer cocked. I don’t trust safeties of ANY weapon. I treat it like it can be fired no matter what, so I don’t use the safety as a safety. I don’t cock the hammer though, ever, unless I’m going to fire.

As someone else said though, PRACTICE is what you must do.

Mine is a double action, so all I HAVE to do is squeeze the trigger. Removing the weapon from your holster is something that SHOULD be practiced, often, because you develop muscles to do the proper job.

In any sport you do certain things over and over to develop the slow, and fast “twitch” muscles. You practice the moves in karate or other martial arts until you get it right every time. You’re basically programming your muscles.

His hopes for a future free of criminal activity went down the dwain. Prison will certainly dwain him of this excess energy.

Tolkien is merely one author who has expressed the idea.

Here’s a thread with a link to actual news story. It does not mention good guy racking the slide.

And here's the actual story referred to in the WND story... http://www.theindychannel.com/news/14967933/detail.html, mentioning the police report that states Mr. Merrell racked the slide. WND actually got it right! >shock<

I’ll ask you again, what has that “idea” to do with this? Instead of hiding behind someone else’s words, why don’t you tell us what you’re talking about in plain English?

If only this had happenned in New Jersey: The citizen would have been prosecuted for weapons possession, while the perp would be given a free lunch and a pat on the head.
