WASHINGTON, (AP) -- Rep. Tom Lantos, a California Democrat and chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, announced on Wednesday that he will not seek re-election this year because he has cancer of the esophagus.
Lantos, 79, is the only Holocaust survivor elected to Congress and is known for his dedication to human rights issues. He is serving his 14th term as a House member.
"It is only in the United States that a penniless survivor of the Holocaust and a fighter in the anti-Nazi underground could have received an education, raised a family, and had the privilege of serving the last three decades of his life as a member of Congress,"

I hope Mr. Lantos enjoys being retired from congress as much as I will enjoy him not being there...
That’s why I mentioned several other prominent Republican Congressional former members as well, you see... knowing that the worst Republican would be better than Speier, understand???
Prayers for your friend’s health. Maybe a miracle will happen.
Moonbeam was mayor of Oakland (CD 9, possibly 13 — the map I’ve got shows only county lines not city lines as well) — and Lantos represents San Mateo (CD 12) — so no unless he moves.
I suppose. But Democrats have little chance of winning that district unless John Doolittle is the nominee.
I don’t respect him but I also pray his cancer is managable
and hope God blesses his family
Yes — I assume he hasn’t moved out of Oakland — but then again he let his law license lapse (thereby making him ineligible to the office), but they let him take office anyway.
Thank you. I hope so too.
My uncle died 9 months after being diagnosed with this same cancer. I wish him and his doctors success...and a cure for this awful disease.
Lantos was one of the few Democrats to win a Republican-held House seat in the Reagan year of 1980. It’s certainly a world away from a time when a Republican could win a seat in that area.
It was Republican only because of a highly unusual special election. The seat had been, of course, owned by liberal Rep. Leo Ryan until his assassination. The Democrats were in total disarray from the special primary and also because of unrelated issues over high state spending by then-Gov. Jerry Brown. Bill Royer, a moderate-to-RINO heavily backed by leftist RINO (now Democrat) Pete McCloskey (who was looking to build a political machine) in the adjacent district, was able to prevail. But Lantos expertly united all the rodent factions a year later and eked out a plurality win in ‘80 despite being outspent by Royer. That was the last time the GOP made any real inroads in that area and it has gone moonbat left ever since. Even if Royer had beaten Lantos in ‘80, Phil Burton’s infamous mass-scale disenfranchisement of Republicans gerrymander of ‘82 would’ve probably deposed him.
ouch
Really - He is a blow hard. Attention seeker , Without the accent , eyes , A real nothing. Sorry for your sickness , I really am . But you could of helped, You did not. Nothing else to say.
"Just a reminder to the predominantly Muslim-led government[s] in this world that here is yet another example that the United States leads the way for the creation of a predominantly Muslim country in the very heart of Europe. This should be noted by both responsible leaders of Islamic governments, such as Indonesia, and also for jihadists of all color and hue. The United States' principles are universal, and in this instance, the United States stands foursquare for the creation of an overwhelmingly Muslim country in the very heart of Europe."
Can't stand the man, think that his positions on many important issues are despicable, and I have no respect for the job he did in Congress.
However, after having said all of that, May God Have Mercy on his soul. I wouldn't wish such misery and suffering on anyone --even Tom Lantos!
I've always opposed your miserable governmental CA Coastal Commission!!! How 'bout some mutual conservative back scratching for a change from this interference with established conservatives up here, huh? How 'bout it???
State Senator Leland Yee is also a potential candidate. But I expect Yee to back out and Speier to essentially be coronated.
You may be interested to hear that Stanford law professor Lawrence Lessig will be seeking the RAT nomination for Tom Lantos’s House seat. Lessig is a liberal, but would be far, far better than Jackie Speier, and would actually raise Congress’s collective IQ by a point or two. These districts don’t want intelligent representation. They want grandstanding Marxist rodent Bush-hating cheerleading media whores.
That is an interesting development, but Speier has overwhelming name ID there.
It sounds like Lessig would be a good judge.
