WASHINGTON, (AP) -- Rep. Tom Lantos, a California Democrat and chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, announced on Wednesday that he will not seek re-election this year because he has cancer of the esophagus.

Lantos, 79, is the only Holocaust survivor elected to Congress and is known for his dedication to human rights issues. He is serving his 14th term as a House member.

"It is only in the United States that a penniless survivor of the Holocaust and a fighter in the anti-Nazi underground could have received an education, raised a family, and had the privilege of serving the last three decades of his life as a member of Congress,"

This type of cancer is generally associated with heavy alcohol consumption. Beware.

In our effort to be fair and not revel in an opponents terminal illness, we need not forget that when he was in good health, he was a vindictive bastard

Worth posting again.

Bill,

You are correct and very perceptive.

So, I'll post it again.

Amen to that.

Found very few instances where I agrees with Lantos on anything - especially after the visit to Syria.

But politics is politics and I wish him well in his fight against this dreadful disease.

Well, he lived to 79 years at least, which is quite a full life. On the flip side, I have a friend in his early 20’s who will probably be dead in a few days from leukemia. Personally, I would prefer to die on the battlefield than in a hospital. But that’s pretty unlikely to occur.

I don't wish him ill, but I won't cannonize him either.

Though the odds are long, I hope he bets it.

On balance he did the wrong things. And the things he did "right" I wouldn't attribute to character. Wasn't he the guy who hit someone with his car and tried to get away with it? A Jack Cafferty/Rick Sanchez type situation?

I always thought he looked like he should be haunting a house somewhere

I heard his reflection doesn't show up in mirrors....

I pray he heals and is cured.

However, I *am* elated he is retiring. His political positions make me retch.

“and is known for his dedication to human rights issues”

Where is his dedication to pro-life issues? Being a Holocaust survivor should have given him the fire in the belly and the emotional fervor to vote against abortion in the Congress. Now he will have to face God in his illness and justify all his pro-abortion votes. I feel sorry for him when the light finally dawns on him that his dedication to the DemocRAT party was responsible for at least 50,000,000 abortion deaths in the USA.

I lost all respect for him when I saw him badgering General Patreaus. That being said, I hope he recovers from his cancer (though not sufficiently to run for office again).

I never liked him and refuse to say I’m sorry for his illness. As a retired enlisted swine in his eyes, I alway, had about half as much respect for him as he did for me and my kind. I do wish him a painless passing into his socialist heaven.

I thought “All the Latinos in Congress have cancer?”

Steadfast for this support of Israel?

“Speaking just for myself, I would be ready to get on a plane tomorrow morning, because however objectionable, unfair and inaccurate many of (Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s) statements are, it is important that we have a dialogue with him,’’ Lantos said. “Speaking for myself, I’m ready to go — and knowing the speaker, I think that she might be.”
...
Lantos noted that “with the speaker’s support,” he has co-sponsored legislation in the House that calls for making available to all countries — including Iran — nuclear fuel for peaceful purposes under international oversight by establishing a “nuclear fuel bank.”

Nevertheless, I wish him well. May the Lord be with him and understanding of his failings, in his hour of need...

There is little doubt that Speier will succeed Lantos in Congress.

Wouldn’t you at least agree that a used Doolittle or Delay would be a better Congressperson than a Speier??? Actually, even a Cunningham would still be a better option, beins he’s in prison were we can sorta watch what he’s doin an read his personal private mail!!!(snort!)

True, but that’s off topic. This race has nothing to do with what’s happening with John Doolittle.
