WASHINGTON, (AP) -- Rep. Tom Lantos, a California Democrat and chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, announced on Wednesday that he will not seek re-election this year because he has cancer of the esophagus.

Lantos, 79, is the only Holocaust survivor elected to Congress and is known for his dedication to human rights issues. He is serving his 14th term as a House member.

"It is only in the United States that a penniless survivor of the Holocaust and a fighter in the anti-Nazi underground could have received an education, raised a family, and had the privilege of serving the last three decades of his life as a member of Congress,"

Lantos, like all San Francisco area politicians, is ultra-liberal. Nevertheless, he does come down on the right side on the War with Terror, and he has been steadfast in his support for Israel.

Being a Holocaust survivor had to give him a clue what we are up against. God bless him in his fight against cancer.

He’s one of the few Rats that I have some respect for, even though I disagree with him on many issues. Prayers for his health.

Prayers for Congressman Lantos and his family. He is one of the few liberal Democrat politicians worthy of our admiration and respect.

Unfortunately, in that district, he will likely be replaced with someone ten times more liberal and not one-tenth as patriotic or honorable as Congressman Lantos.

As a fellow cancer victim..he has one of the worst.
The odds are very bad and the best treatment is a really radical surgery.
Prayers for him and his family and God needs to guide his Drs...
Unlike some of our DU members..we here don’t celebrate tragedy of our political rivals.

As bad as Lantos is, it’s hard to imagine his district electing somebody who is not even worse.

Lantos will be succeeded by the ultraleftist rodent State Sen. Jackie Speier. She was one of Congressman Leo Ryan’s staffers that went with him to Jonestown.

That type of cancer is usually a death sentence, second only to pancreatic. All the same I wish Mr. Lantos well.

"Nevertheless, he does come down on the right side on the War with Terror, and he has been steadfast in his support for Israel."

Perhaps his being a Jew has something to do with that!

Even the most Left leaning Leftists, will often make decisions in their own best interests...
Of course, the REALLY STUPID Jews like Boxer and many others in Congress - are too stupid to know WHAT is in their best interests...

The harm Lantos has done is NOT offset by his few correct votes....

I wish him a full recovery—but Washington DC will be better off with him enjoying retirement.

Actually, most left-wing Jews despise Israel and religious Jews, and are the biggest supporters of giving up as much land as possible for the impossible fantasy of "peace" with Arabs.

She’s the one who ran for Lt. Gov. in the 2006 RAT primaries, right? Is she a Pelosi-style ultraleftist, or more of a Feinstein-style ultraleftist? (Feinstein does not appear to be as much of a traitor as Pelosi.)

Agreed - Lantos, while liberal, is a fighter on a number of foreign policy fronts, including honoring our commitment to Taiwan, which a lot of 'conservatives' would just as soon ignore.

One of the few Democrats I would miss.
