Honey Makes 'Comeback' as Natural Disease Fighter

Amid growing concern over drug-resistant superbugs and nonhealing wounds that endanger diabetes patients, nature's original antibiotic — honey — is making a comeback.

He said the Medihoney dressing can also prevent the dangerous drug-resistant staph infection known as MRSA from infecting open wounds.

"It's been used on wounds where nothing else will work," said biochemist Peter Molan, a professor at the University of Waikato in New Zealand who has researched honey and other natural antibiotics for 25 years.

He's found manuka honey can kill the toughest bacteria even when diluted 10 times and recommends it especially for people with weak immune systems.

No thanks to manukahoney.com, I found out that manuka is a flower in NZ. The AP does infomercials now? The website reads just like the AP item.

I have also read somewhere that eating honey from “one’s own backyard” (geogrpahical region) is better for you than from outside that region.

I am believing more and more in the benefits of natural remedies medicine and less and less in the benefits of big pharma/OTC medicines.

I would like to see more research into what of those remedies work.

Almost 40 years ago, my sister got a book from the library about the healing properties of honey. I believe any honey can do for infections on cuts.

Honey is so packed with sugar and complex sugar strings, that it sucks the water out of any bacteria that it touches and kills them. That is the physical explanation for honey’s anti-bacterial properties.

Basically any natural honey will do. Some manufactured non-natural honeys do not have the same mix of complex sugars and do not work the same. So natural bee-made honey is the way to go.

One thing I have read is that it is NOT effective against Staph bacterias (unlike what is written in the article - this has been proven by medical studies.)

One more thing is that honey sometimes carries a small parasite that is dangerous to babies since their immune systems can’t fight it off. So kids under two should not be given honey.

Otherwise, honey is a very good anti-bacterial agent.

I have a friend that says that bees secrete a natural anti-biotic into the comb to keep the hive free from infection. Takes some sort of pill with the stuff that he swears by.

This is really an update of some past posts. I've read that our military is already using the Medihoney products.

That’s what I was wondering...if it actually would be any better than any other kind of honey.

The sugar form in honey also doesn’t cause the same severe kind of spike like sugar, corn syrup, high fructose corn syrup, and high starches like potatoes does.

From the movie "The 13th Warrior"

Ahmed Ibn Fahdlan: [as Herger offers a mead horn] I can taste neither the fermentation of grape, nor of wheat.
[Herger laughs]
Ahmed Ibn Fahdlan: What? Why do you laugh?
Herger the Joyous: [laughing, and handing over the bottle] HONEY! It's made from honey!

As would I, but it’s not going to be done by the pharmas.

My allergist, who is also an immunologist, has told me that eating local honey really does help with allergies, not as well as the shots, of course (you knew that was coming) but that it does work.

Mr. mm had severe allergies when we got married. When we moved here and started buying local wildflower honey and eating it regularly, they’ve all but disappeared. He tried the shot routine when he was younger, but had such bad local reactions that he could never get up high enough to make any difference.

The claim for manuka honey is that it has an additional, unidentified beneficial factor. That claim has apparently been accepted by government approving agencies.

I have read that honey made in the area where you live is good for your allergies because you are allergic to the plants around you and that is what the honey is made from. I suppose you would build up your immunity to those allergens by ingesting a small amount of them every day.

I have no idea if this is true or just false advertising by bee keepers, or possibly by the bees themselves (snicker).

I have tried Manuka honey. It has a very different taste than your typical clover honey. Although it is just as sweet it has very strong flavor that some may not like. I guess it takes a getting used to ... like drinking and enjoying a beer like Guinness (which I love). I can not attest to any of the health claims.

I have a customer who got MRSA and he resorted to the honey. He said after 3 weeks it cleared up. Worked far better than what the doctors did!
