Global ocean temperatures "plunge"
from data gathered by the National Climatic Data Center ^ | 12/17/07 | Dangus

In 2000, when scientists declared that the Earth's temperature was rising, much anxiety ensued, even though the increase was only half of a degree over sixty years. In just the past year, however, the Earth's temperature has reversed, yielding back one-half of that increase.

The past month's (November's) global oceanic data from the National Climatic Data Center has now been released, and the Earth's oceans surface is .2548 degrees warmer than the 1880-2007 average. That's down from .5250 last year and .5597 roughly a decade ago.

There have been drops of roughly a couple tenths of a degree previously, in spite of the general warming trend. But such drops, blamed on "La Ninas," have occured immediately following temperature spikes. What makes this current La Nina unusual is that the current temperature drop follows an imperceptibly small temperature spike.

As a result, the cold snap is pulling down even the six-year running average of temperatures.

This does not mean that the warming trend has necessarily reversed itself; there have, indeed been declines in running averages even longer than that during this decline. In fact, a cooling trend lasted from the 1940s through the 1970s.

However, unable to justify drastic temperatures with fears of the temperature rising a single degree or less next century, the global-warming doomsday-preachers have been asserting that the surge in global warming in the late 1990s indicated an acceleration of global warming.

The notion of such an acceleration seems difficult to reconcile with the new data: The world's oceans were warmer during warm spells of the 1940s.

This is actually proof that the ice caps are melting. Lot of very cold water off Greenland now which is affecting the Gulf stream. If the Gulf Stream is slowed or stopped all together, expect a mini Ice Age in Europe.

Good point. The bottom line is this, we are insignificant and can’t change what the earth is doing, learn from the dinosaurs, adapt or die.

In 1996 Nature Magazine showed how a new ice age was forming and that it would be far more destructive then warming. If you get carbon credits for heating, what will Al Gore sell for cooling? Ice cubes?

Fear-mongers have been using the power of exponential growth curves to scare the masses for centuries.

Centuries? Exponential? I'm not sure I agree with the adjectives and nouns in the sentence, but the idea is correct.

“Algore will be deeply saddened, of course.”

No problem, he’ll just switch to selling carbon debits.

Funny thing is there’s a thread on DU right now claiming the oceans are heating up and causing walrus stampedes.

Even funnier is one DUmmie’s theory that it’s cruise ship engines that are heating up the oceans.

You're not going to get 40 tons of CO2 out of 1200 pounds of jet fuel. You would probably get a little under 2 tons.

They should have realized how good we had it with GW and left it alone.

Who among us would rather fry than freeze?

In 1996 Nature Magazine showed how a new ice age was forming and that it would be far more destructive then warming.

It's a little hard to see how the present civilization will survive with major financial centers like London and New York under or very near the edge of the ice. A lot of farmland would be useless too.

The alarmists claim elevated CO2 levels will turn off whatever causes the glacial cycles. If true, that would be great news for mankind, but I'd bet a Ruth's Chris dinner it's not.

Notice how they’ve stopped using the phrase “global warming”, and the new phrase is “climate change”? They’re now covered whichever way the data goes

I did notice that but I wonder how they are going to demonize CO2, the stuff I exhale, for making us all freeze.....

You may be right, but you'd also get trillions of tons of air with an extremely slightly elevated carbon dioxide concentration.

It appears to me that such a minor change might be well within the normal measuring error.

Perhaps. I'm not sure how they measured this but I suspect methods superior to those in the earlier 20th century. Thus if we can't trust these new methods for a .25 degree change, we probably can't trust older methods calibrated against newer ones with a .5 degree change. This would leave us uncertain if the planet has warmed this century at all.
