This is actually proof that the ice caps are melting. Lot of very cold water off Greenland now which is affecting the Gulf stream. If the Gulf Stream is slowed or stopped all together, expect a mini Ice Age in Europe.

Good point. The bottom line is this, we are insignificant and can’t change what the earth is doing, learn from the dinosaurs, adapt or die.

Good point IF all they were measuring were Atlantic temps. However these are global ocean temps, so your comments have no merit whatsoever.

If the oceans get hot, its due to global warming! If the oceans get cool, it’s due to global warming! You AGW acolytes are ridiculous.

Hate to break it to you but the entire Arctic Ocean is frozen solid right now. And the low ocean temps are due to La Nina.

According to this book (page 427) we are still "very much in an ice age" and permanent ice at both poles may be "unique in earth's history."

Hmmm...well, here’s a question from the ignorant. The average temparature of the ocean is about 17 degrees celsius (62 degrees farenheit.) Water melting from glaciers should be right above the freezing point. To make this simple, let’s say it’s 0 degrees Celsius.

Now let’s convert everything to Kelvin. The ocean would 290 degrees Kelvin and the melting ice would be 273 degrees Kelvin. Some freeper chemists can help me here, but if I’m recalling my high school chemistry correctly, the resulting temperature should be approximately a weighted average of the two temperatures in Kelvin.

To lower global ocean temperatures by a quarter of a degree, the amount of added water at 273 degrees Kelvin would have to be about 1.3 of the total volume of water in the ocean. Since the average depth of the ocean is 3,795 meters, that much addition of water would raise the depth of the water by about 50 meters or about 165 feet in the past year. That would have flooded out the entire east coast.

So it seems that melting glacial water alone couldn’t have lowered temperatures by a quarter of a degree in a year, unless there are factors I’m not considering. I’m probably making mistakes here, but I’m curious as to where.

That's a real leap of logic. When they measure the ice directly, the ice cap at the South Pole is definitely growing overall. If you can believe those pesky Norwegians (who gave the award to Al Gore), Greenland was growing ice until recently(2005) Rather than postulate an effect of melt water on the Gulf Stream, how about pointing to any current measurements that show a slowed Gulf Stream.

The last time a melt of the northern ice stopped the gulf stream, there was 7000' feet of ice over Wisconsin that was melting. We don't have that quantity of ice to melt today, so I doubt we would see the same effect even if all the ice in Greenland melted away.

There are folks who worry more about an ice age, but they have a more solid reason for doing so - lowered solar output. They don't need to believe strange notions such as the belief that with constant solar input, somehow the world will freeze if one more SUV is produced (in America anyway, apparently SUVs in China and India are exempt from those rules of physics).

Actually, the arctic ice cap is freezing again, it’s already reached the amount of ice it should have in February.

Rush mentioned this today on his show and the article is around here somewhere???

I call BS on Glowbull Climate Warming Change.

That huge thermonukular hydrogen bomb thingy in the sky is all I need to know about warming and cooling.

That's truly amazing! Considering that La Nina is a cooling in the south Pacific ocean. Maybe they should shut the locks on the Panama Canal during the winter to keep that cold water out of there.

>> If the Gulf Stream is slowed or stopped all together, expect a mini Ice Age in Europe. <<

Why? Researchers suggest that an increase of global temperatures of about 5 degrees Celsius would stop the gulf stream from warming of Europe. So what? The Pacific coast doesn’t have a warm current. The result of losing the warm current is that instead of having temperatures similar to Seattle, England would have temperatures similar to Anchorage. Except, of course, five degrees warmer. Which would make Anchorage like Seattle. So there’s no net effect.
