Fear-mongers have been using the power of exponential growth curves to scare the masses for centuries.

Centuries? Exponential? I'm not sure I agree with the adjectives and nouns in the sentence, but the idea is correct.

I recall alarmist "population explosion" extrapolations made during the 60's. We can find other examples of people being alarmist over extrapolated trends
