Bill Shaheen quits Clinton campaign: Clinton Camp Panic?
Union Leader - NH ^ | 12.13.07 | JOHN DISTASO

Posted on 12/13/2007 1:23:48 PM PST by rface

Bill Shaheen has resigned as a co-chair of Hillary Clinton’s state campaign, UnionLeader.com has learned.

Shaheen last night apologized for telling a reporter that if Barack Obama becomes the Democratic presidential nominee, Republicans will use his admitted past drug use against him. Clinton this morning personally apologized to Obama in Shaheen’s remarks. The two candidates reportedly met at Reagan National Airport in Washington.

In a statement given to UnionLeader.com moments ago, Shaheen said, “I would like to reiterate that I deeply regret my comments yesterday and say again that they were in no way authorized by Senator Clinton or the Clinton campaign. Senator Clinton has been running a positive campaign focused on the issues that matter to America’s families. She is the best qualified to be the next President of the United States because she can lead starting on day one. I made a mistake and in light of what happened, I have made the personal decision that I will step down as the Co-Chair of the Hillary for President campaign. This election is too important and we must all get back to electing the best qualified candidate who has the record of making change happen in this country. That candidate is Hillary Clinton.”

Shaheen had told the Washington Post, “The Republicans are not going to give up without a fight, and one of the things they’re certainly going to jump on is his drug use.”

Shaheen said Obama has invited further questions by being so open on the topic.“It’ll be, ‘When was the last time? Did you ever give drugs to anyone? Did you sell them to anyone?’” Shaheen said. “There are so many openings for Republican dirty tricks. It’s hard to overcome.”

Obama campaign officials said the comments were part of a negative pattern employed by the Clinton campaign, which, they said, has become desperate as the Democratic races in New Hampshire and first-caucus state Iowa have tightened.

Of course not. What I’m saying is that the actions of the Clintons-as you mentioned- did not stop him from being re-elected nor did they lower his approval ratings. The people looked the other way.

In summary, the Clinton’s lowered the bar.

By past standards, I would think what you address would save her bacon. Bill used to charm his way out of trouble. Hilary can’t. She may surprise me, but I sense a movement of the big Mo from her camp to Obama’s. We’ll see.

According to Chrissie Matthews, he’ll be back in another capacity soon. This is just a media event.

I think this was just another Clinton “fog-front” tactic. I have a feeling that they all agreed to bring the subject about Obama’s former drug use out in the open just to smear him. Then - Bill Shaheen was selected to be the sacrificial lamb to make the statement publicly, then he would make the public apology, and then leave the campaign . And Hillary would act as though she did not approve of his statement. All of this geared to make it appear as though she is not so mean-spirited as to have brought that subject up again about her challenger.

In the inner Clinton circle I am sure they all went along with it, including Shaheen in the hopes that it would accomplish these two things things: Put questions in others’ minds about Obama once more (thereby giving his supporters some pause, and fuel for anyone thinking about supporting him rather than Hillary), and give those who still believe in Hillary a renewed feeling of how fair-fighting she is, how honest and sincere (ahem) she is - because, after all, she was not tolerant of such a statement, right???! Yuck! It is all a sham and all contrived.

Oh please.

Sandy Berger is still on her campaign staff. She’s not panicked.

This wouldn’t have anything to do with the Frank Luntz audience poll where everyone raised their hand to the question - “do you think that was dirty politics?”

Except that the game is up since everyone knows their game plan. It is also well known the beast is a control freak and her claim she knew nothing will fall flat.

You and I may know that, but there are plenty of idiots that base their views on what CNN or Fox News tells them, and remember something - CNN has plenty of Clinton cronies running around on its staff (aka the Clinton News Network). Just look at CNN's lead story on the debate (if you can stomach it). Clinton got the lion's share of the coverage in the story while Obama was mentioned very very little. You would think she won the debate today, when instead Obama verbally slapped her halfway across the floor after her snide little comment and cackle.

Don't count the Clintons out. We may know their game plan, but their game plan happens to work, and there is no reason to abandon it until it stops working. It put Bill in the governor's seat and then the White House, and it put her in the Senate.

You are assuming his approval ratings were legit. I’m not at all sure they were.

I’m not counting her out but her aura of invincibility sure has become tarnished. I just don’t think it will be the same for them the second time around. You know, fool me once...

You nailed it. The minute I heard about this I knew what it was.

Team Hillary is just trying out their latest campaign tactic. They’ve spent months trying to “soften” her image. So they don’t want to have her start throwing mud and undo what progress they think they’ve made.

Thus, their new method is to have a surrogate throw out damaging info about an opponent (O’s drug use, O’s a muslim, etc.). This gets the smear out into the mainstream. Then the campaign issues a statement that the attack was not approved and Hillary doesn’t approve of those tactics.

She gets to look magnanimous and above the fray....while the damaging allegations are widespread in the media. Shaheen had likely agreed in advance to resign and take one for the team.

There’s just one snag. Such Clintonian tactics worked back in the 90’s....BB (Before Blogs). THe Toons just can’t grasp that their little tricks don’t work anymore. Now, even the media seems to be tiring of their machinations, calculations, lies, and deceptions. Without the media the Clintons are toast...as they’re coming to realize.

He is part and parcel the Clinton campaign. Everything he says comes from the Clinton campaign of that there is no doubt. She may not have known word for word what he was going to say but senior staff did and she knew the point of it.

Given her managerial acumen, Hillary would make a great chancellor.
