Fred Thompson Wins, Hands Down (Freds' "I paid for this microphone" moment)
American Spectator ^ | 12/12/2007 | Philip Kline

First, let me say that this was by far the worst debate yet. The questions were not only skewed to the left, not only almost entirely neglected foreign policy, but they were so broad as to allow the candidates to fall back on talking points. Also, there was no room for back and forth between the candidates. Absolutely awful.

With that said, Fred Thompson was the only candidate who stood out. He was funny, charming, and peppy. Here was a guy who wasn't afraid to speak hard truths, and who displayed knowledge of the policy issues--especially on entitlements. But the moment of the debate, the moment that will be talked about should he defy expectations and go on to win the nomination, was when he refused to raise his hand at the behest of the moderator. This demonstrated conviction, showed he was able to stand up for his principles, that he was a man who valued substance, a leader rather than a follower, and somebody who is running a different kind of campaign. In short, today Thompson was everything that conservatives had hoped they'd be getting when he announced his candidacy.

BOR is such a bore.

And a toad.

Surprise, surprise! There is no Thompson on that list. Whatever, Bill.

Glenn Beck show has Joe Pag guest hosting and he kinda slammed Thompson in the debate coverage to start the show...

Beck does not seem to like Thompson much which surprises me since their views agree with one another.

I still like where Thompson is at this point in the race... he finished well in his first senate race as a big underdog and I expect him to do so in this race.

You don’t understand the basics of either.

Mormonism is based on freemasonry, but differs primarily in that they don’t accept the masonic premise that all paths to God are equal.

That’s not remotely a masonic belief.

Freemasonry is a fraternity, not a religion.

York Rite freemasons, in particular, would disagree with you, as they are exclusively Christian.

I have never seen your posts before, although you have apparently been here since 2001. I just looked at some of them. I guess we get the picture that you think Fred is Bob Dole. You go to every Thompson thread and say that. The first 15 or 20 times it might have been mildly clever and cute. I am not certain it is anymore.

The most basic tennet of freemasonry is that all means are equal. You may not have been introduced to that yet, but if you rise in your lodge you will have to come to grips with it. There are Islamic lodges, Jewish lodges, budist lodges, and Shinto lodges. Try telling worshipful master that Islam must be denounced, and see what he says.

You just gotta love Krauthammer. He’s afraid of no one and he’s just plain honest AND INTELLIGENT in his views.

Crap, I found out the cable provider doesn’t carry C-Span 2 anymore here. C-Span 2 online is playing classical music now...

Fred Thompson seems to have dissapeared from the news. What’s up with that?

Because they fear the Fred.

FEAR THE FRED

Thompson came off with three to five hilarious one-liners sure to have won anyone but Tancredo, Hunter and himself the debate, if spin weren’t king.

Prediction - Fred will certainly go to Tancredo and Hunter after Iowa to see if they'll throw their support to him as they drop out.  Speculation - does he have people talking to them now?

Question - what would the impact be on the Iowa primary if both Hunter and Tancredo dropped out and endorsed Fred NOW?

Tancredo might definitely be tempted by the offer of being given the job of fixing immigration in a Thompson administration.  What cabinet post would that be?  What reasonable offer could Fred make to Hunter to win his support?

I listened to a ABC news report on the radio in my car right after the debate, and they mentioned Rudy, Romney and Huckabee. Then declared that there were no other “fireworks” at the debate.

Nice summarization. Haven't seen the debatable debate. I liked this:

2ND AMENDMENT ADVOCATE (arm everyone and the criminals will back off)

"The Criminals" is a busy group with a big tent. It should be made into a sit-com.

If Rodney Dangerfield were still alive, I'd nominate him for prosecuter and Tommy Lee Jones as the Judge. Chris Rock as Court Reporter and Steven Segal as bailiff. A buxomed blond as defense attorney (the wife in Liar, Liar who was cheating on her husband and sitting on the 'hot seat' in court).

I bet if Fred offered to be Duncan’s VP, he would accept. :)

Doubtful.

Well, I gotta tell you, it's about 9:30PM here and it's been at the top of every news cycle I've heard or watch in the past 90 minutes. I think it will be even moreso tomorrow.

Already being reported by the Weekly Standard:

THE WINNER was Fred Thompson. Fred came to play. He also had the obvious moment of the day when he took on the officious moderator, refusing to go along with one of those idiotic "raise your hands" questions. Given the hour that the debate took place, a lot of people will probably see only a highlight package of the debate. The unquestioned highlight was Fred slapping down the moderator. Even putting that aside, Fred had his best day of the campaign. He was serious, thoughtful, and authoritative. It was a wonderful day for him.

Someone did.

Alan Keyes, 2000 Presidential debates, actually berated a moderator for asking a ridiculous question. "What was the biggest personal mistake you ever made?" (Remember, this was during the whole Clinton/Lewinsky aftermath)

His reply? "My biggest mistake would be treating this question as if it deserves to be answered."

That drew thunderous applause.

Too bad Alan went around the bend. He used to be a great voice for the conservatives. I actually supported his run in 2000.

Now I'm a GOFREDGO Girl.
