Fred Thompson Wins, Hands Down (Freds' "I paid for this microphone" moment)
American Spectator ^ | 12/12/2007 | Philip Kline

Posted on 12/12/2007 2:30:09 PM PST by JRochelle

First, let me say that this was by far the worst debate yet. The questions were not only skewed to the left, not only almost entirely neglected foreign policy, but they were so broad as to allow the candidates to fall back on talking points. Also, there was no room for back and forth between the candidates. Absolutely awful.

With that said, Fred Thompson was the only candidate who stood out. He was funny, charming, and peppy. Here was a guy who wasn't afraid to speak hard truths, and who displayed knowledge of the policy issues--especially on entitlements. But the moment of the debate, the moment that will be talked about should he defy expectations and go on to win the nomination, was when he refused to raise his hand at the behest of the moderator. This demonstrated conviction, showed he was able to stand up for his principles, that he was a man who valued substance, a leader rather than a follower, and somebody who is running a different kind of campaign. In short, today Thompson was everything that conservatives had hoped they'd be getting when he announced his candidacy.

We’ll see if it translates into votes. I sorta doubt it. I mean, your point is a fair one about the stuff getting diced and sliced on the internet. We’ll see what happens. I doubt it’ll make a difference.

I don’t think so. Americans are a great people but like anyone they are easily swayed by a good snake oil sales mans entertaining pitch.

If you don’t believe me, believe P. T. Barnum “There’s a sucker born every minute.” and go watch the ‘Music Man’ again.

“I say there’s trouble! right here in river city” it starts with ‘M’ and it stands for Mitt.

You can go to the link below and listen to Marks show. His show for today will be posted a little after 9:00PM. Then you can listen at your convenience. :)

Does anyone out in Freeper land have access to transcripts of Sean’s show? I would like for folks to get to at least read what Fred said today on Sean’s show. I can’t find the audio or a transcript. Thanks!

Moderator asked for a show of hands on a compound question about “global warming.”

Actually, it was "global climate change"...not necessarily global warming...though I recognize most laymen consider them the same.

Looks like Sen. Thompson got the memo and realized that showing leadership is important when running for president! :-)

“Fred and Mitt, what a great GOP team that will be. (Although not necessarily in that order).”
You have got to be dreaming.

I’m a Fred supporter because he’s a real conservative, he got to the conservative point of view before any of the front runners and is not pandering.

What I don't get is why everyone accuses Gov. Romney of flip-flopping, while Sen. Thompson hung out with all the RINOs and was a member of the Senate Centrist Coalition while in office, etc.

That is, why is it okay for him to "see the light" and become a conservative, but not okay for Gov. Romney? In fact, as Ann Coulter has pointed out, if Sen. Thompson was (sic) truly a conservative, he could have shown it as a Tennessee senator, whereas Gov. Romney couldn't have done so (being in Massachusetts).

Neither are my first choice, but it just seems rather curious to me.

Looks like Mitt, Mike, and the others did not get the memo (and did not even stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night).

“McLame is a freemason, which is almost exactly the same as a mormon”

That is probably the most uneducated thing I have seen posted here in some time (and Lord knows I’ve seen my share of ignorant posts).

Our founding fathers were almost all Freemasons, does that make them “exactly the same as Mormons”?

As a Mason, Scottish Riter, and Shriner for over 25 years, I think I could safely tear into your assertion with impunity and extreme prejudice.

Frank Luntz took a moment on Fox . . .

Luntz, however, claims the focus group thought Romney won the debate hands down which, surprise!, got him the lead spot on the wearisome Hugh Whatshisname Show.

BOR has a new poll tonight.

At this point in the campaign, which Republican candidate do you prefer?
    Giuliani
    Huckabee
    Romney
    McCain

He said there was a debate in Iowa today, but nothing worthwhile happened.
