Two provinces, Manitoba through its Speech from the Throne, and Alberta, through a map of NAFTA Trade Corridors have provided strong evidence that there are plans for a NAFTA Superhighway, or Mid-Continent Trade Corridor. President Bush and Prime Minister Harper dismissed this idea after the Montebello meeting as comparable to planning an "interplanetary" superhighway or a scare tactic whereby a "conspiracy" is laid out.
There is no conspiracy. Plans are going forward. This question is as yet unanswered: does what now recognized as reality stands alone or is part of a wider plan? The one Former Mexican President Fox spoke of a as "a new vision", first NAFTA, then integration through the Security and Prosperity Partnership.
The American Presidential candidates are discussing the existence of what is contained in the Manitoba Speech from the Throne and the Albertan North American Trade Corridors map. Americans concerned about their country losing sovereignty in a North American Union are circulating YouTubes contrasting the reality of the Speech, and Map, to the words of those denying the Superhighways' existence.
Though our political system differs, Canadians will do well to watch the influence of these contributions from Canada as Americans select their next president. Will the person selected be following the denial policy of President Bush or charting a different course?

There have been several threads lately, some with maps of greater specificity and completeness. The better ones show a corridor running to James Bay, which would connect to Hudson Bay and the Northwest Passage when it reopens, and the west coast route goes to Fairbanks, which makes no sense at all unless the Siberia-Alaska connection in included.

I never realized that roads to bordering countries eliminated our sovereignty. If so, it was lost at least 150 years ago.

Actually, the railroads linking the eastern states with the western states was the beginning of the end.

Another thorny issue is sovereignty. Again, K.C. SmartPort, Inc. and city officials have denied that the facility will be sovereign territory of Mexico. However, the documents reveal otherwise. An email record from Chris Gutierrez, president of K.C. SmartPort, dated June 21, 2004, noted, This space [for the customs facility] would need to be designated as Mexican sovereign territory and meet certain requirements. A 2004 Logistics Today article, Going for Broke, also highlighted the sovereignty issue: One holdup now is that the U.S. Department of State wants to know the exact location of the building which will house the Mexican Customs Project, which SmartPort will ultimately provide. State is involved because the facility will be sovereign Mexican territory. The Southern Growth Policy Board, a public policy think tank, mentions the sovereignty angle on its website: Meanwhile, Smart- Port negotiated with the Mexican Customs service to locate a facility in Kansas City on Mexican sovereign territory.

I’m bored with this. I’ve fought countless battles with you and those like you who think roads are bad, that there is some grand conspiracy to merge with Mexico, blah blah blah.
I don’t check in on threads like this very much anymore, but I did this one to see if anything changed. No, it didn’t.
There’s no chance of changing your opinion, just as you have no chance of changing mine. As far as you’re concerned, we’ll be spending pesos when the ribbon-cutting ceremony for a new highway is opened.
I obviously do not know how to successfully argue against that mentality, and I’ll only attempt it for a couple hours a month.
The pushback on this is impussiant compared to the resistance that Eisenhower recieved when he started the National Defense Highway System. When they started condemning huge swaths across the country for the Interstates there was near rebellion in the provinces. The battles were titanic and formed some of the basis for Eisenhower being labeled a communist by far right groups.
