Spitzer Takes Step Toward Universal Health Care

Gov. Eliot Spitzer said the state will commission an independent research group to help New York develop a universal health coverage plan.

The Department of Health and the Insurance Department will award the $470,000 contract to the Urban Institute, an independent, nonpartisan policy research group, to analyze proposals and develop a ‘‘strategic roadmap’’ to universal health insurance.

Health Department officials said the Urban Institute would receive a two-year contract, but officials in the governor’s office expect the group to begin work by March 1 and to have a final recommendation to Spitzer by next summer.

The contract must be approved by state Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli.

‘‘There is arguably no better use of state resources than making sure New Yorkers are healthy,’’ Spitzer said Tuesday in a written statement. ‘‘We expect to model proposals that will enable us to reach that goal.’’

Assembly Health Committee Chair Richard Gottfried is expected to announce a universal health coverage proposal for New York state. He said his proposal could save voters $4 billion annually, but how the system would be paid for was unclear Tuesday.

Earlier this year, the governor charged the health and insurance departments with developing universal health proposals. The analysis will include proposals to provide universal health coverage through public and private mechanisms.

The Urban Institute was one of eight organizations that responded to the Department of Health’s competitive request for consultant services for this project.

The state has conducted public hearings throughout the state to solicit input on proposals for reforming the health care system, improving access to insurance and determining how universal coverage can become reality in New York. The eighth and final hearing will be held Wednesday in Old Westbury, Long Island.

About 2.5 million people in New York state are uninsured, according to officials in Gottfried’s office.

This is how it started in Canada. It was never a federal issue there. The provinces implemented it one at a time.

Better “universal” health care that is generated in Albany, limited to the subjects of the state of New York, than such a scheme finding its genesis in Washington, D.C.

"I am a (bleep) steamroller and I'll roll over you or anybody else," Eliot Spitzer said, reported by the New York Post.

The associated press demonstrates either extreme bias or dumb-witted ignorance. The AP claims that the Urban Institute is “an independent, nonpartisan policy research group.” The Urban Institute may make this ridiculous claim but it is outrageous for the AP to accept it. The Urban Institute is a leftist activist organization opposing almost all conservative positions.

Watch....This is going to come to you in the form of a payroll TAX...similar to the Medicare deduction which is taken whether you have insurance or not.

It creates a HUGE money pot....but doesn't insure that you will get the care without going through hoops.

Let me translate. Help the bloated government bureaucrats New York to develop yet another way to financially rape the hardworking taxpayers and reward the irresponsible and the illegal immigrants so as to buy their votes.

Independent? Non partisan? Snicker.

In the world we call REALITY it will cost the taxpayers tens-hundreds of billions MORE while delivering inferior health care services at the same time.

470 grand down the drain just to hear the partisan left wing "Urban Institute" tell Spitzer exactly what he wants to hear: "Yes, lets have a Universal health care system". And the Spitzer can go around waving that phony report saying something along the lines of, "See? The NON PARTISAN INDEPEDENT urban institute says that Universal health care will solve all our problems! We'll all get better health care for less money!"

Spitzer is pushing socialized medecine and subsidizing a left-wing think tank on the order of $350,000.

Paging Senate and Assembly Republicans:
1. Don't fund this.
2. Propose giving $350,000 to the Heritage Foundation or Cato to come up with a proposal to deregulate NY Health care.
