Conservative Dissidents at OU-Athens
by: Emily Mullin, November 27, 2007
Since coming to college, Ive been challenged countless times on my political views. Ive gotten into some pretty heated debates with friends, acquaintances and outright strangers. Ive been called some nasty words and gotten criticized publicly in the newspaper, but I guess it all comes with the territory. You see, Im kind of a minority on campus. Or at least it seems that way. To some, I am a conservative. To others, a Republican. And to others still, Im ignorant, stupid, or well, you get the point. I prefer to consider myself as a free-thinking individual who doesnt go along with the crowd. Ive learned that the crowd in college is farther to the left of me.
Before coming to Athens, Ohio I always labeled myself as a Republican. I was brought up in a traditional, conservative household and small town. But my convictions were based on the preaching of my parents and the beliefs of the people around me instead of my own experience and understanding of politics.
Then I decide to become a journalism major. Thats when I realized that I neededand actually wantedto start keeping up with the news. I started reading different newspapers, websites and blogs, watched TV newscasts and listened to talk radio on my way to and from high school. Sometimes I headed to the Current Affairs section at the bookstore, browsed the titles and bought a few books on politics. I would talk and debate with friends and classmates about the latest headlines. I began to question and challenge what I was always taught to believe.

Probably a Christian, too.
outside of business, comp sci, and chemistry, the modern college campus has the stench of a communist reeducation camp.
Keep up the good work and continue to ignore barbs and foul language from the lefties.
I’ll wager that today’s typical, smarmy leftist prof’s take great pleasure in knowing that their conservative students are constantly biting their tongues, for fear of lowered grades and demeaning attacks.
I put these college prof’s just above muggers.
I sent her an encouraging message.
Emily, keep living the good life and God Bless!
OU grad proud to hear about this young lady. The OU campus was very liberal back in the ‘70s when I was there, too.
Other OU students have faced this issue. It is one of the reasons we did not send our kids there. OU has a bad reputation as a pit full of liberals. Frankly I think that state funding should be reduced for a state university that discriminates.
On the flip side, how’s Antioch doing these days?
(chuckle)
Struggling - they are trying to keep it open but it will not thrive because the enrollment is not up. It is suffering because it is totally one sided. Only liberal views are accepted. There is no real free speech at Antioch.
I, too attended OU. No, I did not graduate from there. I sucumbed to the party atmosphere. But the experiences I had there has made me more conservative now that I operate a small business.
I constantly look back and say what was I thinking??!!
When Jimmy Carter was elected we sat around getting high and plotting how we were going to benefit from the coming socialism.
I did hang with some interesting characters, a nephew of the Shah and a grandson of Krupp.
Richard Vedder is an economic professor at OU. I have a great deal of respect for him.
LOL! Good’n there, Badeye...
Actually, I read on some other FR thread recently that they’re gonna try to keep that place going for awhile longer.
Whistlin’ past the graveyard?!
Antioch’s problems go far beyond the PC insanity. HR managers at the SHRM annual convention routinely burst into laughter about seeing one of its graduates come through the door.
When the college is so screwed up their degrees guarantee the applicant WILL NOT GET HIRED...well, nuff said.
‘There is no real free speech at Antioch.’
You can’t find a liberal controlled entity that does allow free speech.
