Deer hunters prove guns aren’t the problem
Greater Milwaukee Today ^ | 11/21/07 | Mark Belling

Posted on 11/27/2007 9:53:11 AM PST by baldeagle390

About 650,000 armed men have been roaming around Wisconsin the last few days. Yet there are no reports of any of them killing each other intentionally and, as of Monday, only one had died in an accident. Yet, we are lectured over and over by the liberal apologentsia that the reason there’s so much violence in urban America is because of easy access to guns. Yeah, then how come the deer hunters aren’t killing each other? In fact, Wisconsin’s deer hunt is everything Milwaukee’s central city isn’t. Despite the often heavy drinking, inevitable tensions between close family members, squabbles over who has a right to hunt where, pressure to get the big buck and the sheer firepower of the average deer rifle, incidents almost never occur. As of Monday evening, there was a lone single fatal accident.

The clichŽ that "guns don’t kill people, people kill people" sounds trite but the peace of the Wisconsin deer hunt proves its truth. The shooting gallery in Milwaukee’s central city and near south side has nothing to do with access to guns and everything to do with a breakdown of culture. The fact that the majority of the criminals are black or Hispanic has gagged white liberals into silence about the real problems. Black leaders, with the rare exception of a Bill Cosby or Sheriff David Clarke, are nonexistent. In the meantime, tens of thousands of kids are being raised without fathers by young mothers. Many of those moms are themselves on drugs or involved in crime. Gang leaders rule neighborhoods. Yes, they use guns. So do the deer hunters. The difference is that the deer hunters have values and responsibility.

Trying to teach leftists the truth is like trying to fit a full-size Hummer into an 8x10 Tuff-Shed.

there’s also the difference that many of us that go out hunting go out with multiple thousands of dollars worth of gear for a weekend of hunting. we’ve learned for our fathers, been instilled with a level of responsibility, saved up, researched, shopped, purchased, scouted, practiced, took the time off work, time off from families that we’ll miss and will be happy to go home to, and left, bearing the responsibility of our actions, knowing the effect a mishap will have on not just up but all involved and their families.
gangbangers will steal, borrow or buy the cheapest gun available- probably worth less than my cheapest .22 rifle- and do their thing with no regard to long lasting effects or consequences- these never having been instilled in them by their absent parents- and they have nothing to lose.

I agree that the leftists are hardheaded. Additionally, the right side tends to be equally hardheaded. This article seems somewhat slanted to me in that no one on the left side has blamed deer hunters for violence. The article does say that they blame easy access to guns, but the reality is that the deer hunters are clearly not the issue. Therefore, using them as an example, is somewhat of an irrelevant point. The nation we live in is doing it’s best to control who and who does not get a gun. I don’t think any additional measures need to be taken. The background checks that are in place today are designed to keep guns out of the hands of criminals. It is unfair for the government to assume that everyone who buys a gun is going to use it criminally. Hence, we are doing the best we can as a nation to protect our people without impeding on personal rights laid out by the constitution. I just think the point this article is trying to make uses the wrong angle to make it.

Like everything in Wisconsin there is a racial angle that is ignored. The hunters are almost 100% white (with a few Hmong tossed in).

During the Vick-Dog nonsense, I remember comparisons between Vick killing dogs and deer hunting. Which is an absolute outrage.

naturally, the only story on the news on the radio this morning was about a girl who woke up yesterday and when she got out of the shower, her room was fun of feathers. A stray bullet reportedly when through her pillow while she was in the shower.

I took my 13 year old grandson {in PA} yesterday. I rained all day {like a cow whizzing on a flat rock} and we only saw 5 deer with no shots taken.

He was disappointed but not discouraged.

Although he lives in Annapolis, I'm going to hunt with him at least one more day this season. Hopefully he will get to shoot, but if he doesn't we will be back next year, {allah willing s/off}.

This would have been a perfect place to insert the number of people killed roaming around in motor vehicles the past few days.

What a coincidence: firearms season is just wrapping up in my state too, and there wasn’t a single accident. Must be sheer luck.

The point of the article is that in this group of people with guns and easy access to guns, the problem isn't there. Ergo, the presence of guns and access to guns is NOT the root of the problems that the anti-gun crowd claims it is.

I don't think the point is irrelevant. To me, it (correctly) implies that those who go thru the legal process required to purchase and carry a weapon are not a threat to the general population.

I just love those photos of egalitarian John Kerry with his $1,000 coat and his $20,000 custom fit english SxS shotgun, that he's purchased for his one day photo op.

He's just one of the fellas.
