Byrd spokesman Jesse Jacobs says Byrd plans to spend his birthday quietly reading the hundreds of birthday wishes that have flooded his offices. Byrd also expects to have lunch with his staff and to visit with his seven great-grandchildren.
A surprise 90th birthday party was held Thursday in the ballroom of the Capitol Hill hotel. More than 300 people attended, including West Virginia's entire congressional delegation and Governor Manchin.
Manchin presented Byrd with a West Virginia Living Legend Award, which the governor created as a tribute to renowned West Virginians. The award has been given to only two other people: pro football Hall-of-Famer Sam Huff and retired Brigadier General Chuck Yeager.
Byrd, who has served in the Senate since 1959, is the oldest member of the Senate
Or not.
Politics aside, I don’t think it’s a good idea to have a suprise birthday party for a 90 year old man.
That’s a lot of little cross-shaped candles on one birthday cake!
LOL!
LOL
Byrd’s birthday? I don’t really give a sheet.
Will he be celebrating with any of his Klan buddies?
They’ll be a ceremonial cross burning in his honor.
Can’t someone get him to watch one of those computer pranks where the screaming face suddenly pops out at you?
He looks darn good for a man who has been burning the cross at both ends for most of his adult life.
When Byrd's staff jumped up and yelled "SURPRISE", the Senator was quoted, "You white 'N-words' scared the H*ll out me".
Someone call Senator Lott’s office and tell him not to make a speech praising the old man.
It got him in trouble last time.
Does he get to wear a special birthday sheet?
Much of the gala surrounding Byrd's 90th birthday came Thursday at a surprise party for him in the ballroom of the Capitol Hill hotel.
More than 300 people - including all of West Virginia's congressional delegation and Gov. Joe Manchin - crammed into the venue to celebrate "Big Daddy."
Manchin presented him with a West Virginia Living Legend Award. The award, created by Manchin as a tribute to renowned West Virginias, has been given to only two others - pro football Hall-of-Famer Sam Huff and retired Brigadier Gen. Chuck Yeager.
...
After several speeches, Byrd was presented with a framed autographed photo of himself at the recent Congressional Gold Medal ceremony with the Dali Lama, President George W. Bush and first lady Laura Bush, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi.
Byrd apparently was so overwhelmed he had to hold back tears as he told the crowd how grateful he felt for the moment.
LOLOL!!!
As a “gift”, the State of West Virginia will now be renamed “Byrdland”.............

True, he’d rather have a nice quiet cross burning.
