Hunter Position on Driver Licenses for Illegal Immigrants: "No, Period."

Presidential candidate Congressman Duncan Hunter today reaffirmed his long-held position that as President he will not support any legislation that provides drivers licenses for illegal immigrants. In recent weeks, Senator Hillary Clinton has stated that she was both for and against providing drivers licenses to those here illegally, with her latest decision falling on the same day that New York Governor Eliot Spitzer announced that he was abandoning his controversial plan to issue licenses to undocumented immigrants.

"This is not a subject that our political leaders should be going back and forth on," stated Hunter. "All aspects of combating illegal immigration are important, but the ramifications are higher when we are discussing areas where opportunities are actually being created for those illegally in our country to be provided with a form of identification accepted nation wide.

"At tonight's Democratic debate, I expect Senator Clinton to once again state her position on this important issue based on who is in the audience and what they will like to hear. I disagree with that philosophy and I believe it is simply irresponsible. Voters should have a clear understanding where the candidates stand on this important issue. With me, people know where I stand and they know that just as I have always opposed providing driver licenses for illegal immigrants, I will continue to do so as President."

During his 27 years in Congress, Hunter has consistently voted against providing any forms of benefits to those who illegally enter the United States and he is a current cosponsor of two pieces of legislation prohibiting providing drivers licenses to illegal immigrants:

H.Res. 800- a resolution stating that that States should not issue driver's licenses or other government-issued photo identification to aliens who are unlawfully present in the United States.

H.R. 4160- legislation withholding highway funds from those states which issue a driver's license or identification card to illegal aliens.

Hunter has consistently emphasized the need to strictly enforce our immigration laws, rejected all calls for amnesty and is the author of the Secure Fence Act, passed by Congress and signed by President Bush last October, establishing 854 miles of double fence along the smuggling routes of California, Arizona and Texas.

Jim, To tell you the truth I get the feeling that we, non Fred heads, suppose to somehow fall in line with FT. I also don't know, exactly, where is the point where desagreement or simply not liking a candidate goes beyond into 'trashing.'

Let's cut to the chase, what would you say if I told you I don't like FT enough to vote for him?. I fear the Republican party is going in the wrong direction, Duncan is a Diamond as far as politcians go. The fact that he has been ignored except for Pissant and a few of us in FR, surely tells a lot about where party is going. The question is, can we like someone other than Fred in FR to remain in good standing?

I like Hunter just fine. I don’t like people trashing Fred Thompson 24/7 on this conservative site with lies and B/S. Pissant was warned to knock it off and opted to ignore the warning.

Dearborn, Mich. Debate

JimRob, start at 1:33--would that be considered trashing, or is it comparing and contrasting records?--which is the normal exercise of a political campaign

IMO that is what the overwhelming majority of us are doing--including our friend...

What exactly is trashing? We do that with everyone we don't like, I think.

I have said very strong things about JulieAnnie, because I believe they are trying to sell him as what he is not. I honestly thing RG is an enemy of social-conservatives. I suppose if you really liked him, then I would have been banned by now?

Mind you Jim, I understand this is private Forum and it is yours!... I would just like to really get a grasp for the rules. By thw way, anyway we can get Pissant's email address or a way of communicatijng with him? Could you allow him to publish or email us an email address or something? That would be appreciated.

Giuliani deserves a thorough thrashing. Thompson does not.

Duncan Hunter is BY FAR the best card we have in the deck at this point to go up against the Hildebeast.

His viewpoints IMHO are the most in line with the concept and philosophy of Free Republic. His delivery and sincerity top class. His foundations strong and clear. His humor and self-deprecation a great contrast against that puffed up, would be dictator Hitlery.

I wont say anything bad here about other GOP candidates, except perhaps the outright RINOS like Giuliani and McCain.

But what I WILL say is THIS: k my word, we will come to regret not nominating Mr. Hunter if it turns out that way, I can assure everyone.

I recall the story of a Ford delegate at the 1976 GOP National Convention, just after President Reagan gave his concession speech to Ford, say outloud "Oh my goodness. We just nominated the wrong man!"

I suspect that once Hillarys steam roller really gets into operation, and were Hunter to have to give a concession speech in Minnesota, a lot of conservatives are going to be saying "O my goodness. We just nominated the wrong man!" Just my take. I hope and pray it will be otherwise. Now the really hard work--over the next two months--starts to avoid this at all costs.

..would Republicans choose an establishment candidate, whom they needed to prop up and project upon him virtues which did not exist and color his record to appear more conservative than it is—and at the same time reject a great conservative and great man—they would NEVER do that again (/sarc)

Ok Jim I have been given some links and I will read them in order to understand what Pissant did or did not do. Like everything else, it always depends on one's point view. The way I hear it, is not not clear cut as you seem to state it.

But again, it would be nice to have a way of communicating with him. I would appreciate it if you can. No QUESTION, things get emotional from time to time, God knows I have been trying to remind everyone, and myself! that we are "friends despite our differences," as my tag has pointed it out from DAY ONE and it has never changed, except for the addition of Hunter 08 :). But sometimes...it's not easy liking everyone... That is just the truth.

It does seem to be going this way. And I think it is legitimate debate to question it and challenge it.

Call it "Quality Control" we are engaging in.

“What exactly is trashing? We do that with everyone we don’t like, I think.”

The moment a bunch of you accused Fred Thompson of being a babykiller and pro-death, is the moment that all respect was lost for Hunter’s supporters.

There is trashing, and there is going over the line. Hunter’s supporters went over the line.

Would you care to give us links to Hunter supporters doing that - calling Thompson a babykiller and pro-death? I have never read of a Hunter supporter doing that. They may have cited one of his past votes, or who he represented in his lobbying days, but using the words, “babykiller and pro-death”? I don’t think so.
