Hunter Position on Driver Licenses for Illegal Immigrants: "No, Period."

Presidential candidate Congressman Duncan Hunter today reaffirmed his long-held position that as President he will not support any legislation that provides drivers licenses for illegal immigrants. In recent weeks, Senator Hillary Clinton has stated that she was both for and against providing drivers licenses to those here illegally, with her latest decision falling on the same day that New York Governor Eliot Spitzer announced that he was abandoning his controversial plan to issue licenses to undocumented immigrants.

"This is not a subject that our political leaders should be going back and forth on," stated Hunter. "All aspects of combating illegal immigration are important, but the ramifications are higher when we are discussing areas where opportunities are actually being created for those illegally in our country to be provided with a form of identification accepted nation wide.

"At tonight's Democratic debate, I expect Senator Clinton to once again state her position on this important issue based on who is in the audience and what they will like to hear. I disagree with that philosophy and I believe it is simply irresponsible. Voters should have a clear understanding where the candidates stand on this important issue. With me, people know where I stand and they know that just as I have always opposed providing driver licenses for illegal immigrants, I will continue to do so as President."

During his 27 years in Congress, Hunter has consistently voted against providing any forms of benefits to those who illegally enter the United States and he is a current cosponsor of two pieces of legislation prohibiting providing drivers licenses to illegal immigrants:

H.Res. 800- a resolution stating that that States should not issue driver's licenses or other government-issued photo identification to aliens who are unlawfully present in the United States.

H.R. 4160- legislation withholding highway funds from those states which issue a driver's license or identification card to illegal aliens.

Hunter has consistently emphasized the need to strictly enforce our immigration laws, rejected all calls for amnesty and is the author of the Secure Fence Act, passed by Congress and signed by President Bush last October, establishing 854 miles of double fence along the smuggling routes of California, Arizona and Texas.

If presidents were elected by simple, honest Yes or No answers, Hunter would be the only one left in the contest.

I haven’t heard him explain an answer yet. He doesn’t need to.

Exactly. When we hear Hunter say the following, let me know....

"I was for it before I was against it...."

"I've changed my position since I voted...."

"Let me clarify what I really meant.."

"But I had to be liberal to get elected before....."

Is Hunter getting squishy on this? I expected "No, Exclamation point." :-)

Doesn't matter. Most of the people in the GOP aren't all that smarter than the people who support the Dims. For the most part, they are voting for celebrity candidates like Rudy McRomney, whoever they've heard of on national TV. If LBJ came back to life and put an R next to his name they'd vote for him ( and of course, they already did, his name was Lyndon Baines Bush, another big spender from Texas ).

Hate to be pessimistic, but look what the GOP "leadership" has done to Tancredo and Hunter: gone out of their way to villify them. That's because they threaten the spending, which the GOP leaders have promised to their clients.

Ron Paul was right: he said that the current government is just two gangs having a fight over who gets to spend the people's money. The ideology that the parties supposedly support are just marketing positions, pieced together to try to corral enough votes so that their guys end up with the money.

Honest guys like Tancredo, Hunter, even Paul are homeless in this party. The Republican party is now back to its form of the latter part of the 19th century: a party of large corporations whose market is primarily government - corporations that cannot compete in open markets, because no one wants what they sell. So they need a government to shove their junk down our throats.

The other guys are just the front men for those corporations.

Sorry for being negative - but what can you say when Hunter and Tancredo are in the single digits, even now?

Ah, he’s just another sellout.....

Actually a few months back a poster who trolled and disrupted the Hunter threads posted pages about the fact that an apostrophe on Hunter’s logo was ‘backwards’.......

Look at all the stumbling around that going on in debates on both sides of the aisle. You put clearly conservative and consistent Hunter up against ANY democrat and that democrat will slink off the stage like a whipped puppy.

Duncan Hunter: "I don't need consultants. I write my own speeches. I don't need advice on having people testing the political wind to tell me what positions they think I should take. Most of the major positions I've already taken, and are there for better or worse. I know what I stand for... "

Don’t forget, Congressman Hunter is not just a Presidential Candidate. He is saying no from the Homeland Security Committee. Unlike the other candidates who’s nos are only lip service at this point, Hunter has power and will continue to use it.
