PHOENIX (AP) - A smoking suitcase was spotted Tuesday in the cargo area at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, airport officials said. The suitcase was in the cargo hold of a US Airways plane headed to San Antonio when it started emitting smoke, said Claire Simeone, an airport spokeswoman. The plane was moved to a less busy area while authorities investigated the suitcase on the tarmac.

The Phoenix Fire Department called in a hazard materials team and the owner of the suitcase is being questioned by police, Rodriguez said.

They are probably more worried about the affects of second hand smoke than the actual reason it is smoking....

Smoking Suitcase Found in Ariz. Airport
was the Suitcase stupidly smiling at the Brownie vending machine while desperately searching it’s pockets for change?
To: RDTF
What brand of cigarettes was it smoking?
(Sorry I couldn't resist - this badly-worded headline made me do it! ;-)

An overheated pocket rocket, I presume? It took 38 posts to get to the likely culprit. I am disappointed.

There are many areas where you can smoke at Sky Harbor in Phoenix. We can even carry guns. I suppose not on a plane, but in your pocketsies.
There may have been a little dust storm inside that suitcase. We get them here all the time. /sarc

No details are available, except that the incident was in no way related to terrorist activities. Owner must have been a muslim, huh.

[W]hat if a laptop bursts into flames in flight? You're just imagining what the feds are going to say now that the "dog ate my homework" that depends on what the meaning of "is" "is" airport's navaid electronics manager overlooked a malfunctioning beacon not long before he committed suicide "wires shorted in the main wing spar" the billing records were unexplainably found in the WH residence shortly after the statute of limitations ran out suicide note was found three days later all torn up in his briefcase other "equally plausible" excuses have been used up.
Of course, like the Iowa girl who noted that at least one other of the four people actually called-upon from among the 200 people with their hands up in the air was also one of those being spoken-to beforehand by a campaign associate, who's going to squelch the 200+ people reporting to the FBI that they saw missile-like streaks rising up toward the ill-fated aircraft the next time?
No sweat, if Boeing can roll over, surely Sony or Dell can be made to do somersaults.
Who you gonna believe, the astronomical weight of statistical improbability against team Clinton claims or Hitlery in a pink sweater with her copious rear being covered by the MSM?

(That's right, I have no proof. So what of it??)

My first thought was a laptop battery as well - even with all of the recalls, there are a hell of a lot out there.
As well, somebody could have stuffed a laptop in a suitcase, and if it was hibernated or turned off, and merely in a sleep mode, and got jostled around (say baggage handlers....what a coincidence that one just so happen to notice this) it could have come out of sleep mode, and in a very confined space could get hot incredibly fast (although there should be safeguards that shut them down, but then again, nobody expected the batteries to be bad).
Of course, anybody stuffing a laptop in a suitcase is an idiot and just asking for it to be stolen. For all of the security b.s. we go through in the airports, I know very few people who travel a lot who haven't gotten something stolen from their luggage.

Been there done that!
The airline said it was my fault for getting out of a Lincoln Town Car, wearing a fur coat, and presenting the appearance of wealth because I had nice luggage!
Years ago, but I bet they still hate to pay!

Yes, airliners are now required to have smoke detectors and fire suppression in cargo holds, due to that event.
