My first thought was a laptop battery as well - even with all of the recalls, there are a hell of a lot out there.
As well, somebody could have stuffed a laptop in a suitcase, and if it was hibernated or turned off, and merely in a sleep mode, and got jostled around (say baggage handlers....what a coincidence that one just so happen to notice this) it could have come out of sleep mode, and in a very confined space could get hot incredibly fast (although there should be safeguards that shut them down, but then again, nobody expected the batteries to be bad).
Of course, anybody stuffing a laptop in a suitcase is an idiot and just asking for it to be stolen. For all of the security b.s. we go through in the airports, I know very few people who travel a lot who haven't gotten something stolen from their luggage.

Been there done that!
The airline said it was my fault for getting out of a Lincoln Town Car, wearing a fur coat, and presenting the appearance of wealth because I had nice luggage!
Years ago, but I bet they still hate to pay!
