A nation under a well regulated government, should permit none to remain uninstructed. It is monarchical and aristocratical government only that requires ignorance for its support.
Thomas Paine, Rights of Man, 1792
I wish from my soul that the legislature of this State could see a policy of a gradual Abolition of Slavery.
George Washington (letter to Lawrence Lewis, 4 August 1797)
Our obligations to our country never cease but with our lives.
John Adams
To cherish and stimulate the activity of the human mind, by multiplying the objects of enterprise, is not among the least considerable of the expedients, by which the wealth of a nation may be promoted.
Alexander Hamilton (Report on Manufactures, December 1791)
Human Felicity is produced not so much by great Pieces of good Fortune that seldom happen, as by little Advantages that occur every Day.
Benjamin Franklin (Autobiography, 1771)

We've done you one better Mr. Paine. We don't even care if they can speak the common language let alone have more than a fourth grade education these days. We find they make much better workers when dumb, barefoot and unable to communicate.
It's the new American way.

For no phase of life, whether public or private,
whether in business or in the home,
whether one is working on what concerns oneself
alone or dealing with another,
can be without its moral duty;
on the discharge of such duties depends all that is morally right,
and on their neglect all that is morally wrong in life.
Marcus Tullius Cicero, On Duties I

What strikes me is not only the fact that todays public shools don’t teach history as it happened if at all, but the fact of the wisdom the forefathers had in guiding a fledging nation through its infancy. Compare them to todays politicians and you’ll find todays sadly lacking in forethought and definitely not thinking of the people but rather how to use them to their advantage.

We find they make much better workers when dumb, barefoot and unable to communicate. Government is the provider. Corporations are evil (but not govt.corps) Lawyers are the new religious leaders. Keep Social Security from being solvent. Don't destroy public education. Apply the Fairness Doctrine to opinion shows and not network news.
They need no further education. We live in times that invert logic.

"When you become entitled to exercise the right of voting for public officers, let it be impressed upon your mind that God commands you to choose for rulers, 'just men who will rule in the fear of God.' The preservation of government depends on the faithful discharge of this duty; if the citizens neglect their duty and place unprincipled men in office, the government will soon be corrupted; laws will be made, not for the public good so much as for selfish or local purposes; corrupt or incompetent men will be appointed to execute the laws; and the rights of the citizens will be violated or disregarded. If a republican government fails to secure public prosperity and happiness, it must be because the citizens neglect the divine commands, and elect bad men to make the administer the laws." Noah Webster, 1832
I cannot imagine a clearer statement of fact that this.

if the citizens neglect their duty and place unprincipled men in office, the government will soon be corrupted... It is a logical progression. Unprincipled people cannot elect unprincipled leaders without having unprincipled government.

Unprincipled people electing unprincipled leaders leads directly to unprincipled government.
