"...It's important to note that even though some cities may have comparatively high murder rates, crime is, on the average, down in the U.S over the last two decades. Over that period, the homicide rate in the U.S. has fallen from a 1991 peak of 9.8 murders per 100,000 people, to just 5.7 in 2006

Due to the death penalty and tough on crime laws liberals would like to jettison. If they get it their way, look for the homicide rate to zoom back up.

Wow at 5.7% that is over 170,000 deaths in 2006. I wonder how that measures up with the total number of Iraqis and US military killed combined since 2003 to now?

How nice for them to be included on such a notorious list!
The only two surprises to me are St. Louis - I thought the mid-west was more peaceful. And Buffalo...where it is so darn cold, and covered with snow and ice most of the time (that's why I left the north anyway) that I would think most people would be too busy keeping warm and staying inside! Maybe they get "cabin fever?" LOL

And what do they all have in common ? Aside from Cincinnati, not a one has had a Republican Mayor in 35-50 years or longer. In New Orleans’ case, not in about 130+ years.

Interesting that most, if not all, of these cities are enclaves run by liberal Democrats.
To: shrinkermd
Surprisingly, the country's biggest cities aren't usually the most dangerous. Ah... maybe because most of the people have been killed off by now... ?
To: shrinkermd
These top 10 murder cities accounted for approximately 1973 murders/negligent homicides in 2006. This death toll equals about 1/2 of the total death toll to date for American troops in Iraq for the entire war.
Where is the outrage? Where are all of the protesters? The anti-war crowd has chosen the death toll in Iraq as the foundation of their protest. If they are so concerned about the loss of American lives, why aren't they doing something about the murder rate right here in America?
They don't give a crap about our troops or their families. All they really care about is hating America and protesting our actions abroad. If they truly cared about the loss of American lives, they would do something productive to reduce the number of murders, car crash fatalities and even incidental fatalities right here at home, each of which exceed the number of war dead annually.
Do you see them doing anything productive? I didn't think so!
