France divided as Sarkozy woos US
news.bbc.co.uk ^ | 11/08/2007 | Hugh Schofield

That Nicolas Sarkozy is France's most pro-American president in generations - in fact, come to think of it, ever - there is no reason to argue over.

It is the one point on which both he and his enemies would agree.

A man who declared his intention on going to Washington of "reconquering the heart of America" - and who in his speech to Congress cited Elvis Presley, Charlton Heston and Neil Armstrong as his heroes - is clearly not lukewarm about "les Etats-Unis".

"I’m done with the France bashing. This guy Sarkozy is for real. "

I agree completely; Sarkozy's election is the best thing that has happened to France, the US, and the free world in many years.

"The French know things and having their world view to share, will add a new dimension and experience to the Anglo-American way of doing things."

And I sincerely hope the first and foremost of these is the rapid and total resumption of America relying on NUCLEAR POWER!!! (like France)(I'm back on "French Fries" again, by the way)

From the article on Sarkozy:

"The left sees the president blundering naively into an America that he worships but does not understand"

No, he DOES understand America. A lot better than these pinko leftist french opinion makers. And a lot better than about 40% of the American people themselves.

God, the left is going to hate this, being close to France while we are pushing Nuclear power makes it more difficult for the American critics, I hadn’t thought of that.

Let’s aim for victory.

We Westerners share a common responsibility. That responsibility involves a lot of single duties, but from a larger perspective, it has to be made clear once and for all that no obligation precedes acting non-sissy on the Internet.

A Western World united will not know failure.

The road ahead of us is long but;

“I take up my task in buoyancy and hope.

I feel sure that our cause will not be suffered to fail among men.

I feel entitled at this juncture, at this time, to claim the aid of all and to say,

“Come then, let us go forward together with our united strength.”

Winston Churchill, May 13, 1940

- A bad habit of mine, I’m afraid.

Greetings.

Sarkozy’s speech contained those same sentiments.

I enjoyed how he attacked the idea of France as a “counter balance” to the US. He expressed the belief that it silly for one Western nation to “counter balance” another because that means being anti-western.

The man has stones and a lot of energy. More power to him.

“All we ever hear from the American left is how the onus is on us to make everyone our friend”.

- More than half of us Europeans share the ideas and believes of Americans like you. Sadly enough, to the media the views of ordinary Europeans like me are less interesting than featuring spoiled leftist European teenagers who desecrate your flag.

- True words.

It’s as simple as this:

We Westerners are under attack.

We will unite.

We will win.

Uniting is the only way for us to really win. It has to be a multiprong effort on the part of the West. Using military, diplomatic, and economic force to bring to hell those who wish us (as individuals) and Western Civilisation dead.

Sarko is a breath of fresh air..... but did the BBC have to look to the commie fishwrap “Liberation” for a critical view?? Surely even the BBC knows that the communists at “Liberation” are not exactly a source of enlightened understanding..... wait, I guess the BBC is citing their favorite ideological guides to America-hating civilization-bashing miasma.

Dominique Quessada, for example, said the president has "psychopathologically as well as politically" swallowed whole the myth of the lone American hero, in constant battle with society. "His action is built round a giddying BruceWillisation: I arrive and I save the world," he wrote.

Myths? Giddyness? Saving-the-world complex? The Left owns the copyrights. Especially the French Left's obsession with Che Guevara, "the barricades" and other nonsense. At least Bruce Willis hasn't spent most of his career (as far as I know) shooting homosexuals and Catholic priests in the back of the head.

And in another flight of speculation, the philosopher and writer Michel Onfray saw significance in Sarkozy's use of the phrase "re-conquer the heart of America." Because has the president not just lost his own heart, in the person of his beloved but now divorced wife Cecilia?

Why are ad-hominem attacks permissible if they are carried out by the Left?

"Greetings from Europe to The Land of the Free and the Home of the Brave!"

Why thank you! I had fun between Skye and Alicante years ago on 1st Classe sleeper trains and ferries through 11 countries with an AF buddy. Whenever we could sneak away. I assume you are in France. There is a nice hotel on Raspail Street across the street from a little park there. We were there. Down the street is a restaurant where we had this 3 tiered tower of seafood and a couple bottles of wine. Outdoors. Just got done in time to sleep our way to Holland. 1st Classe sleeper of course. What a trip that was.

I’m done with the France bashing. This guy Sarkozy is for real.

Yep! Some of the French bashing going on here is embarrassing.

The French people duly elected Sarkozy after he made very clear his pro-American sentiments. And so far, he is walking the walk and seems to have approval from his countrymen.

BTW, the 60 Minutes interview was disgraceful and I don't blame Sarkozy one bit for walking out on it!

absolute vodka——great
roxette-— always sucked
Volvo sucks but if you like it over there then that’s OK
Saab-— the same

Over here -USA- we have a vast selection of automobiles to choose from. Saab and Volvo are just one of many, Might be great cars but are just another car to me and overpriced for what you get. You should be proud of Saab & Volvo. They’re your homeboys
And it is true that here in USA liberals love those cars. Volvo more than Saab

But what I really like from Scandinavia is the furniture. You sent us lots of beautiful furniture 20-30-40-50 years ago. These days a lot of so called Danish modern are knockoffs from China/Asia. I have some of the old Scandinavian design. It’s timeless. For me at least

This Scandi design went beyond furniture but furniture is where it makes the most impact for me

Thanks. It really does come down to Western Culture! The USA is a blend of international cultures, but the vast majority is European, and stand together we must.

Up until the French elected Sarkozy it was mostly deserved.
