Clinton: Stiffed the waitress? Big tip found
Baltimore Sun ^ | November 8, 2007 | Glenn Thrush,

At first, the story line went like this: Sen. Hillary Clinton may have committed the ultimate political culinary sin -- not tipping the waitress.

But the story was wrong: NPR has retracted its initial report, a nasty little anecdote about iClnton meeting a working-mom waitress at the Maid-Rite eatery in Iowa over the summer, using her story in a speech -- and then stiffing her on the tip.

Now NPR has confirmed the tip with an editor's note: "Since this story aired, Hillary Clinton's campaign contacted NPR to say that the campaign paid Maid-Rite a bill for $100 for food for the day of Clinton's visit and left $57 in tip money. NPR contacted Maid-Rite manager Brad Crawford, who confirmed that a bill was paid and tip money was left.

"Crawford, who was not in the restaurant at the time, said that he believes a campaign staffer left the money with one of his employees, but "where Hillary was sitting, there was no tip left." Neither Anita Esterday nor the manager on duty that day were available for comment as of noon Thursday.''

“Crawford, who was not in the restaurant at the time, said that he believes a campaign staffer left the money with one of his employees, but “where Hillary was sitting, there was no tip left.”

The tip is probably in the campaign staffers pocket.

In the meantime, the owner, or someone at the register, pocketed the larger tip and didn’t tell (or apparantly share) the larger tip with the waitress that waited on and talk to Her Highness. As this was some days ago, she let it fester prior to mentioning it and hadn’t been told that the establishment got a tip from the staff sale.

I think your statement above is good explanation of what may have happened.

But you are assuming the food Hillary ate was free in the other statement ... what employee says the food was free to her? As you say you go on business trips ... and this was a business trip for Hillary ... she had staff there taking care of the finances ... the food was paid for and a tip was also left, a 63% tip.

When you take someone out to eat on your business trips and you pick up the tab (using your credit card) do you not pay for the meal and the tip?

As I said in my post I did not want to turn this into a debate...

Oh for goodness sake. This is Free Republic. Debates are what's done here!

LOL. You cannot post something as you did (an opinion that most FReepers would consider wrong) and not expect to get called on it simply because you don't want to debate.

Hillary gets to do that and the MSM abides by her demand. FReepers won't.

“No. Not “k” by me. Your family has effectively been stealing from low wage earners for years. It’s not “k.””

John Edwards? Is that you?

I was skeptical about this from the start, because designating a staffer to make sure that there is a good tip, is such an obvious and easy thing to do. Of course, if the person receiving the overall tip, doesn’t spread it around to all parties, then there is a problem.

This is one of my favourite sites. This is a link to the HClinton thing, but you might like to know what waitpeople think of getting stiffed. I lived on my tips for two years and I still remember how hard I worked for each and every dollar. I haven’t waitressed for over thirty yrs now, but I still remember.

You think you meet some jerks in an airport? Hoo-boy! You just haven’t lived until you’ve served a drunken family of nine who decide to settle family business while you are trying to serve the salads. That is one story. Over thirty years ago. This websites got millions of those stories. Enjoy!

i saw on drudge that the bill was 157 and the tip was 100. seems likely for bringing such a circus into a diner. sounds to me like someone was holding out some tip money from this waitress and she thought no one left a tip...

I worked and paid for my education myself .....

And so did most of us...by waiting on tables for tips.

no one cares how you paid for what. stop giving us your resume.

you and your silly parents want to be cheap? fine. this is america. HOWEVER, as you have said, tipping is customary.

so, the next time you go into a restaurant tell the waiter/waitress that you do not believe in tipping. tell them as soon as they come to your table. if you are going to go against such an ingrained custom, then you should be human enough to let them know at the outset.

tipping, silly girl, is so deep in american culture that it is permissible to pay servers WELL BELOW minimum wage because it is understood that people tip for services rendered.

upon hearing that you will not tip, any manager worth a damn will refuse you service. go microwave a burrito. weirdo.

RUSH: The point is that Mrs. Clinton is just so self-focused, she walks around and in her own mind she's regal and she's royalty. She doesn't pay for anything, and certainly doesn't leave tips. She will be glad to exploit this waitress at campaign events, telling the story and how she got to know her very well and listened, great interest to the struggles the waitress faces in her challenging life, and, "If I am elected president again," Mrs. Clinton will say, "then I will fix this waitress' circumstance." So we're wondering, is this the tip of the iceberg because it may well be because Drudge went back in the archives and found Hillary did the same thing in 2000, stiffed a waitress at a diner during her Senate campaign. There is a pattern here. But it's the attitude, folks, it's the out-of-touch, not even thinking. I've told you many times, you can always determine the character of someone by observing how they treat people who can't do anything for them.

A waitress who makes less than minimum wage can't do anything for Mrs. Clinton, and so how did she treat her? The waitress is not happy. It's not just the tip. It's that Mrs. Clinton is out there using her. By the way, ABC has written about this. It's all over NPR. The Drive-Bys, it's in a lot of places, and they've gone back and gotten this story from February 2000 off Albion, New York: "Maybe it's no big deal elsewhere, but it's all the buzz in Albion. Hillary Rodham Clinton dropped into the Village House, a favorite diner in this upstate farming town, and ordered two orders of scrambled eggs, home fries and rye toast. So far, so good. The locals appreciate a hearty appetite. Her breakfast was on the house, and when she left the waitress, a single mom, found not a penny at her plate. The locals have been talking about little else since Tuesday, when she stopped for breakfast after making a speech about how New York's farmers 'are really hurting these days.'"

Then she goes in there and stiffs the waitress. So there's a pattern here, but, again, it's the attitude, folks. (cont.)

Do they give her a $57 tip and then take the taxes right away or does she still have to declare that on her forms?

Huh? The lady didn't get her tip, so suddenly the manager comes out to cover for Hitlery. Couldn't the manager then, have taken her tip? Since when doesn't Hillary give a tip to her own waitress?

Hey, no big deal to me: I am betting she is a jerk to waitresses as well as other "servants" she deems worthless. I'm just saying: this is probably a great big huge CYA.

The Clintons probably warned them about Arkancide suicides by backing into a knife several times.

“But it sounds like the waitress still didn’t get anything. Or the Clinton camp is lying, who would think!!”

What about the report that the waitress was quoted as saying she was upset that Senator Clinton mentioned her by name at a later campaign stop, and that Clinton used her name without her permission? Was that report also not true??
