Newtown (AP)_ The family of an illegal alien who was electrocuted while working at a town owned building in Newtown will be getting a $300,000 settlement.

The settlement will benefit the young daughters of Ivan Patricio Tenecela, an illegal immigrant from Ecuador who was killed in 2004 when electricity from a power line shot through an aluminum ladder and shocked him.

The men were painting the outside of the Meeting House, a building that is maintained by the Heritage Preservation Trust of Newtown.

The settlement is with the town of Newtown and the Heritage Preservation Trust of Newtown as well as Campbell Quality Painting, the company that employed Tenecela.

At the time of his death Tenecela lived in Port Chester, N.Y.

I see nothing wrong with a man’s family getting compensated for his death on the job. Illegal or not, the family is still without it’s breadwinner. The man was doing an honest job for the local govt.

How did this illegal alien have standing before the courts?

He died while committing a crime...illegally working in the US...

I guess the town may disagree.

I’d have no problem with it either if the only person stuck with this bill was “Campbell Quality Painting, the company that employed Tenecela”

Someone is going to have to tell me how the town is at fault for this. Did he make the mistake or was something wrong?

300,000 is a good stake in Ecuador. Not that much for Connecticut/New York. Where does “the family of” live? What is their status?

It's a fairly common question to ask whether illegal aliens drain money from the US or if they are contributing to our productivity. Some folks say that they pay their fair share of taxes. Other folks say they use up vast resources at hospital emergency rooms (since they don't have health care).

This is an illegal alien that just cost the taxpayers $300,000. Do you think he paid that much in taxes?

Illegal aliens hurt the country. In many ways. Can we afford to get rid of them? I say we can't afford not to.

This is actually good news. This means that scummy employers who employ illegals can’t duck paying damages when something bad happens to their lawbreaking workforce. It makes employing illegals less attractive.

Would that we could levy such damages on cheap employers who break the law with hiring. We need to make that happen at a local level if the Washington politicos lack the will to do the right thing.

Using an aluminum ladder on a jobsite. Stupid.

My sister’s best friend’s dad was killed this way, about 35 years ago. Back then there were not a lot of alternatives. There are today.

Are ya serious? The man was ILLEGAL, get it, ILLEGAL, should NOT have been in this country let alone working for the local government, this whole thing is outrageous.

I don't know if the employer is on the hook here. It looks like the town settled for $300K. The employer might have been some fly-by-night operation, and essentially lawsuit-proof, because they have nothing to sieze.

The town could be faulted, then, for hiring a fly-by-night company and not demanding an insurance certificate.

BTW, for anybody having work done at home, hiring a reputable firm and demanding an insurance certificate is a really, really good idea.

There's no way the folks that hired the clowns should be responsible for any death, or injuries the clowns cause to themselves.

From the article: “The settlement is with the town of Newtown and the Heritage Preservation Trust of Newtown as well as Campbell Quality Painting, the company that employed Tenecela.”

Now, I’m not sure about the balance of who pays what, and I’m not a lawyer, but if the illegals were employed by Campbell Quality Painting without the town’s knowledge it should be able to prosecute and fine that company for breaking the law with its hiring practices.

I agree, but don’t you think his family still deserves compensation?

No they do not, they should have been put on a plane and sent back to whence they came.
