This is actually good news. This means that scummy employers who employ illegals can’t duck paying damages when something bad happens to their lawbreaking workforce. It makes employing illegals less attractive.

I don't know if the employer is on the hook here. It looks like the town settled for $300K. The employer might have been some fly-by-night operation, and essentially lawsuit-proof, because they have nothing to sieze.

The town could be faulted, then, for hiring a fly-by-night company and not demanding an insurance certificate.

BTW, for anybody having work done at home, hiring a reputable firm and demanding an insurance certificate is a really, really good idea.

That would blow. This is one more reason we need tougher legislation and enforcement of fines on employers of illegals.

Sigh.
