:::FreeRepublic's Threat Matrix:::
U.S. to Offer Turkey Help on PKK

The U.S. is to offer Turkey a package of measures to dissuade Ankara from mounting a large-scale military incursion into Iraq to attack PKK Kurdish guerrillas, who have killed scores of Turkish soldiers in recent weeks.

Ahead of a meeting in Washington on Monday between President George W. Bush and Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Turkey’s prime minister, U.S. officials said Ankara would have to get concrete American help to combat the PKK, which has bases in northern Iraq from where it frequently launches attacks into Turkey.

“Erdogan has to go back with the belief that for whatever reason, the U.S. is serious” about tackling Turkey’s concerns regarding the PKK, said Matthew Bryza, deputy assistant secretary at the U.S. state department responsible for Turkey policy. Full story...

“ETA orders militants to attack Basque railway link”
19 November 2007

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “Madrid - ETA leaders have ordered members of the Basque terrorist group to sabotage the construction of a high-speed rail line linking the Basque Country and Madrid, signaling a shift in the organization’s strategy as it desperately attempts to regain prominence following the formal end of a ceasefire in June.

According to documents seized by police, ETA members have been instructed to hinder work on the rail line, currently being built between the Basque Country’s three main cities - Victoria, Bilbao and San Sebastián - and which will eventually connect with Madrid.”

“Mexicans Stroll Unchecked Through Border Ports”
By Randy Hall and Josiah Ryan
CNSNews.com Staff Writers
November 20, 2007

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “(CNSNews.com) - A video made during an investigation by the U.S. Government Accountability Office shows a stream of Mexicans strolling through the border into the U.S. as federal Custom and Border Patrol agents sit staring at “information on computer screens.”

On another of the videos recorded at eight entry points across the country, an agent was reportedly waving aliens through the lane without “looking at them, making verbal contact or inspecting travel documents.”

According to testimony from Richard Stana, director of homeland security and justice issues at the Government Accountability Office (GAO), these incidents were not isolated.”

November 19, 2007

Coalition forces capture senior criminal element leader, disrupt terrorist network (Baghdad)

BAGHDAD, Iraq – Coalition forces captured a suspected senior Special Groups leader and detained another suspected criminal during operations late Sunday near Baghdad, in the Adhamiyah area.

The targeted individual was reportedly responsible for smuggling and storing weapons used in attacks against Coalition forces, and supported Special Groups criminal elements through funding and training. The suspected criminal was also reportedly an associate of several other senior-level Special Groups members from Diyala to Baghdad who were involved in attacks on Coalition forces.

“We will continue to pursue criminal elements who fail to honor Muqtada al-Sadr’s pledge for peace and we commend those who honor it,” said Maj. Winfield Danielson, MNF-I spokesman. “The groundswell of citizens who have courageously decided to oppose these terrorist elements are vital for improved security in Iraq.”

Coalition forces find detention facility and weapons cache; 12 killed, including senior Mosul al-Qaeda leader, five detained

BAGHDAD, Iraq – Coalition forces killed 12 terrorists, detained five suspects and found two bodies Sunday and Monday during operations targeting al-Qaeda networks along the Tigris River Valley in Iraq.

During coordinated operations east of Samarra, Coalition forces targeted al-Qaeda in Iraq propaganda operations and several senior terrorist leaders. As the ground force approached the target area, they were immediately engaged by armed men. Responding in self-defense, Coalition forces called for supporting aircraft, who engaged the enemy, killing five terrorists.

During the firefight, several armed men maneuvered inside a nearby building and continued firing on Coalition forces. The ground force returned fire in self-defense, killing five terrorists. Upon further investigation, the ground force discovered an al-Qaeda in Iraq detention facility, which contained the bodies of two additional men bound in shackles and believed to have been executed prior to Coalition forces’ arrival. Information on the individuals held in the detention facility is not available at this time.

Coalition forces also found suicide vests on three of the killed terrorists and a weapons cache, including rocket propelled grenades, rockets and anti-aircraft weapons. Coalition forces detained one suspect during the operation.

During operations In Mosul, Coalition forces killed a wanted individual believed to have been a senior leader in Mosul’s terrorist security network. Reports indicate the wanted individual planned attacks against Iraqi Security and Coalition forces, which included multiple suicide car-bombing attacks. Reports also indicate he purchased weapons and explosives for the terrorist network. As Coalition forces approached the target building, an armed man emerged. Perceiving hostile intent, the ground force engaged, killing the terrorist, who was later identified as the wanted individual by one of the building’s occupants. Two suspects were also detained during the operation.

Coalition forces targeted an al-Qaeda in Iraq car-bombing network facilitator during operations south of Baghdad late Sunday. Coalition forces called for supporting aircraft to engage a vehicle associated with the targeted individual. The vehicle was safely destroyed and Coalition forces assessed one terrorist was killed by the precision air strike.

In another operation south of Baghdad, Coalition forces detained two suspects while targeting members of al-Qaeda in Iraq in Arab Jabour believed to be responsible for attacks against Iraqi and Coalition forces.

“We will relentlessly pursue terrorist leaders who try to deny the Iraqi people a future of their choice,” said Maj. Winfield Danielson, MNF-I spokesman. “Car-bombings and other attacks against innocent Iraqis will not be tolerated.”

Zarqawi Map Aided Successes Against Iraqi Insurgency

Tuesday, November 20, 2007

WASHINGTON — A key turning point in the U.S.-led war against the Iraqi insurgency came even before last winter’s troop surge, FOX News has learned.

A map drawn by Al Qaeda in Iraq leader Abu Musab al-Zarqawi — who was killed last year by U.S. forces — turned up last December in an Al Qaeda safe house and essentially gave U.S. war planners insight into the terrorist group’s methods for moving explosives, fighters and money into Baghdad.

“The map essentially laid out how Al Qaeda controlled Baghdad. And they did it through four belts that surrounded the city, and these belts controlled access to the city for reinforcements and weapons and money,” said Maj. Gen. Bob Scales, a FOX News contributor who recently visited Iraq.

5 kg bomb seized in Malate raid
11/21/2007

MANILA, Philippines -- An explosive device was recovered in a raid in Manila Tuesday night as police continued to hunt down suspects in last week’s bomb attack on the Batasan Pambansa that killed four people, including a lawmaker.

The raid on a residential area on Abella St., in Manila’s Malate district around 9:30 p.m. yielded a five-kilogram bomb but no arrests were made, said a police officer who was with the raiding team but refused to be named. Police would defuse the bomb, which operatives found submerged in water, at the Quirino Grandstand in Manila.

On November 13, a bomb went off at the south wing of the House of Representatives complex in Quezon City, killing Basilan Representative Wahab Akbar and three others. Two days after, police and military operatives arrested three suspected members of the al-Qaeda-linked Abu Sayyaf group, who later confessed to killing Akbar. Three other suspects were killed during the encounter.

On Monday, former Tuburan mayor Hajaron Jamiri, a political foe of Akbar, was arrested and being investigated for his possible involvement in the Batasan bomb attack. Lieutenant Colonel Ernesto Torres Jr., Army public affairs chief, said the bombers allegedly planned to attack Akbar’s house in a push Pasig City subdivision had they failed to kill him at the Batasan.

Analysis: Iran's secret Syrian plan
November 19, 2007

Israel has been providing intelligence and satellite images to the U.S. about a secret Syrian nuclear program for several months, according to media reports. Discussions between Israel and the United States took place last summer regarding a possible strike. But when Israel found the matter so pressing that when they realized the U.S. was not ready to act, on September 6 they attacked a Syrian nuclear site. Hence the question: what is Syria really up to or more to the point what is Iran up to?

First, let's start with an underreported explosion that occurred in a Syrian military base outside Aleppo on July 26. Jane's Defense Weekly reported, citing Syrian defense sources, as saying the explosion took place during a test to fit a "Scud C" missile with a mustard-gas warhead. It quoted the sources as saying the explosion occurred when fuel caught fire in the missile production laboratory.

But there might be another explanation. Kuwait's Al Seyassah newspaper recently reported that a Shiite Lebanese religious cleric claimed the Iranians were allegedly supervising a chemical weapons manufacturing program and that tens of Iranian experts and engineers died as a result of that explosion. He also said Israelis attacked the base. He added that Western officials told him they received proof from Israel on the Syrian chemical weapons program. Even if Israel's involvement is not proven, what remains sure is that it must be very happy that a chemical weapons facility in Syria has been partly destroyed.

Now regarding the September 6 strike; while we may never know what really occurred, what remains sure is that the situation is direr than one could imagine and that most likely, Israel did not just bomb a nuclear site in the early stages. Indeed, the silence of the international community and especially the Arab world after the attack is a first, and it shows the gravity of what happened. Even though Syria and its Iranian sponsor are detested, and in the case of Iran feared, in the Muslim world, the fact that there was no condemnation of Israel at the U.N. could be interpreted as a tacit relief that Israel acted.

Another proof of what transpired came from ranking Republicans on the House Intelligence and Foreign Relations committees, Ileana Ros-Lehtinen and Peter Hoekstra, who were briefed on the Israeli strike and sworn to secrecy. They wrote an op-ed in the October 20 Wall Street Journal clearly underlining the seriousness of the situation regarding both the North Korean and Iranian involvement in the Syrian arms program.

Finally, the fact that the Bush administration (including President George W. Bush, Vice President Dick Cheney and most notably Defense Secretary Robert Gates) has been ramping up the rhetoric and taking action against Iran (including the latest sanctions against the Iranian Revolutionary Guards) in the past week, might also be linked to what really happened in Syria.

The Syrian story is far from over: in fact, on October 23, Al Seyassah ran a story about potential new secret nuclear sites in Syria. According to Western sources cited by the paper, it is possible that Syria is developing other nuclear sites with the help of North Korea, Iran and Iraqi experts, the latter who fled their country at the start of the Iraq war in 2003. In fact, observation satellites have allegedly located in Syria at least two other sites similar to the one destroyed by Israel last month.

Iran's handwriting is all over the wall from the chemical to the nuclear arms program in Syria. Indeed, in research conducted last year as part of an article published in Washington's The Examiner, this reporter delved into Syrian's secret nuclear program, making the point that Syria might actually be "Plan B" for Iran. By helping develop nuclear sites in Syria, strikes on Iran might turn out to be useless. This was a smart strategy until Israel bombed the Syrian nuclear site on September 6 and made the world notice.

First video of al-Qaeda in Maldives released

Dubai, 20 Nov. - An al-Qaeda cell operating in the Maldives has released a video on the Internet. The video runs for two minutes and is said to be a trailer for a longer and more detailed version set to be released soon.

"Your brothers in the Maldives are calling you", is the message that runs on the screen to announce the creation of the first al-Qaeda cell in the tiny Indian Ocean nation, which is considered to be a tourist paradise. The Maldives, a chain of more than a thousand islands on the Equator, is famous for its beaches and celebrity retreats.

A still image on the video shows three men (photo), who are completely dressed, with one wearing a motorcycle helmet, sitting together on a white sandy beach. There is also a fourth figure standing in the foreground whose face is covered. The video shows images of men, who appear to be the members of the Jihadi cell, inside the Dhar-al-Khuir mosque on the remote Himandhoo island, hours before it was raided on 6 October. The cell was targetted in an investigation into a September bomb blast in the capital Male.

At least 12 foreign tourists were injured in the 29 September attack, which was the first recorded Islamist militant attack in the country.

The video was filmed and released with English captions, suggesting that it was designed to recruit to new members to join the al-Qaeda cell.

Coalition Forces Kill 5 Terrorists, Detain 11 in Iraq

American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON, Nov. 20, 2007 – Coalition forces killed five terrorists and detained 11 suspects affiliated with the al Qaeda network in Iraq during several operations in central and northern Iraq that ended today, officials said.

During operations conducted yesterday and today in Rabiyah and northern Samarra, coalition forces captured a wanted individual while targeting al Qaeda financial and courier operations. The captured individual is believed to be associated with propaganda operations and senior terrorist leaders. During the operation, coalition forces saw one individual maneuver into the palm groves. Perceiving hostile intent, the ground force called for supporting aircraft to engage, killing the terrorist. Coalition forces detained three suspects, in addition to the wanted individual.

North of Samarra, coalition forces captured a wanted individual believed to be a courier for senior al Qaeda leaders. During the operation, one suspect received minor wounds. He received medical care on site before being detained by coalition forces. In addition to the wanted individual and the wounded suspect, the ground force detained two suspects without incident.

During the operation in Rabiyah yesterday, coalition forces captured an alleged former al Qaeda in Iraq leader believed to be a planner of car-bombing attacks in Mosul. Coalition forces detained two other suspects, in addition to the wanted individual.

Southwest of Baqouba, coalition forces targeted al Qaeda in Iraq and foreign terrorist facilitators during a 24-hour operation that began Nov. 18 and ended yesterday. Coalition forces saw several men maneuvering toward their position, and perceiving hostile intent, called for supporting aircraft to engage the men, killing four terrorists. Coalition partners in the area discovered weapons, including missiles and grenades, ammunition and an improvised explosive device.

“These operations exemplify the continued success we’re having in operations against terrorist networks,” said Army Maj. Winfield Danielson, a Multinational Force Iraq spokesman. “With the help of Iraqi citizens and their security forces, we will succeed in defeating al Qaeda in Iraq.”

In other recent operations, coalition forces killed 12 terrorists, detained five suspects and found two bodies during operations that began Nov. 18 and ended yesterday targeting al Qaeda networks along the Tigris River Valley.

During coordinated operations east of Samarra, coalition forces targeted al Qaeda in Iraq propaganda operations and several senior terrorist leaders.
