:::FreeRepublic's Threat Matrix:::
U.S. to Offer Turkey Help on PKK

The U.S. is to offer Turkey a package of measures to dissuade Ankara from mounting a large-scale military incursion into Iraq to attack PKK Kurdish guerrillas, who have killed scores of Turkish soldiers in recent weeks.

Ahead of a meeting in Washington on Monday between President George W. Bush and Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Turkey’s prime minister, U.S. officials said Ankara would have to get concrete American help to combat the PKK, which has bases in northern Iraq from where it frequently launches attacks into Turkey.

“Erdogan has to go back with the belief that for whatever reason, the U.S. is serious” about tackling Turkey’s concerns regarding the PKK, said Matthew Bryza, deputy assistant secretary at the U.S. state department responsible for Turkey policy. Full story...

Venezuelan president to visit Tehran, discuss cooperation

Published: 11.18.07, 10:38 / Israel News

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez will land in Tehran Sunday, Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Mohammad Ali Hosseini said.

Chavez is slated to arrive for a one-day visit accompanied by a senior delegation that includes five ministers. He is expected to sign agreements that will increase cooperation and strengthen the ties between Tehran and Caracas which have grown much closer in recent years. In a Saturday meeting with OPEC member nations, Chavez said that if the US attacks either Iran or Venezuela, the price of oil will jump hundreds of dollars. (Dudi Cohen)

“Three U.S. Agencies Reviewing Decision to Export High-Tech Support to Syria”
Saturday, November 17, 2007
By George Russell

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “Officials from three U.S. agencies are now reviewing their records over the past three years to see if permission should have been granted for a major American computer company to ship “sensitive” technology to Syria, a state sponsor of terrorism.

FOX News originally reported that after years of harsh talk and escalating rounds of sanctions against Syria for supporting terror and seeking weapons of mass destruction, the United States is quietly supporting a United Nations program to supply the regime with sophisticated surveillance equipment and computers to monitor its borders.

That surreptitious support emerged in the course of a FOX News investigation that began after a surprise Israeli air strike on September 6 destroyed a mysterious Syrian facility that many experts believe was a North Korean-style nuclear reactor.

But as the Syrian government enters the closing stages of the $9 million program to upgrade its customs and border operations computer systems, officials from the National Security Council, the Commerce Department and the State Department are investigating the matter.”

Coalition forces disrupt al-Qaeda foreign terrorist and propaganda operations; 27 detained

BAGHDAD, Iraq – Coalition forces detained 27 suspects today during operations targeting al-Qaeda networks in central and northern Iraq.

Coalition forces captured three wanted individuals during operations in Baghdad while targeting foreign terrorist and weapons facilitators. Reports indicate al-Qaeda in Iraq members were trying to establish a foreign terrorist network in the city. In addition to the wanted individuals, Coalition forces detained four suspects without incident.

In Bayji, Coalition forces captured a wanted individual believed to be an al-Qaeda in Iraq leader in the city, who is also associated with foreign terrorists. Coalition forces detained one other suspect during the operation.

During continued operations targeting foreign terrorist facilitators, Coalition forces detained seven suspects in Mosul without incident.

In a series of coordinated operations around Samarra and Baghdad, Coalition forces captured one wanted individual and detained 10 other suspects while targeting al-Qaeda in Iraq’s media network. During one of the operations, Coalition forces found two sets of homemade body armor vests and two sets of armor plates, which they safely destroyed to prevent further use by terrorists.

“Iraqi and Coalition operations are diminishing al-Qaeda’s ability to attack the Iraqi people,” said Maj. Winfield Danielson, MNF-I spokesman. “More Iraqi citizens are coming forward and helping us find terrorist networks; foreign terrorists are not welcome in a free Iraq.”

“Viewers Respond To Security Alert”
Posted: Nov 16, 2007 03:43 PM
Viewers Respond To Security Alert
By Som Lisaius, KOLD News 13

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “It’s only a document, but this FBI urgent report has certainly ruffled a lot of feathers since we told you about it last night.

KOLD News 13 is the only news outlet to obtain the report which outlines a possible terrorist threat right here in Southern Arizona.

It speaks specifically to Fort Huachuca in Sierra Vista.

It gives no timetable or explanation of how the threat will be carried out, but does say “A group of Iraqis may have entered the United States through tunnels from Mexico into Arizona.”

And those same “Iraqis are believed to be the ones who will perpetrate the attack on Fort Huachuca.”

“The military is always a target, I believe.”

That’s Lt. Colonel Matthew Garner of the United States Army.

He says Fort Huachuca was notified of the threat in May and very specific measures were taken to protect the Fort and its 13-thousand people.

For security purposes, he wouldn’t tell us what those measures were.

But assured us Fort Huachuca is fully prepared for any threat that comes its way.

“We operate within that knowing that we are always a target,” he said. “And then we take all precautions necessary whether it’s a general threat or a specific threat like the one you’re talking about.”

When we asked government officials about the document, they were more concerned with where we got it than verifying what it had to say.

When we told them we were moving forward with the story, the FBI released a statement saying, “The information in this report was disseminated to law enforcement and intelligence partners for situational awareness, even though it had not been completely evaluated.”

They went on to say, “There is no information to state this is a credible threat. We remind people to remain vigilant and report suspicious activity to their local authorities.””

“Massive explosion in Parchin missile site of the Guard Corps”
Wednesday, 14 November 2007

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “NCRI - Yesterday afternoon (Tuesday, November 13) a series of explosions rocked Parchin Military Site (where missiles, including Cruise missiles, are manufactured) in southern Tehran. As a result, several military personnel of the site were injured.

The explosions reportedly started in missile industries section of the Site. When shrapnel of the explosions hit another sections, eight other warehouses located next to each other were engulfed in flames.

The fire, which began at 2:00 p.m. and was put out at 8:00 p.m., was so extensive that fire fighters from seven fire stations rushed to the scene. Four of the injured were Mostafa Nourizadeh, Alireza Verdi-lou, Nasser Rezai, and Morteza Motahari.

The clerical regime is trying very hard to prevent the news of the incident to leak and claimed that it was a normal fire. To this effect, in a memorandum to its staff and other relevant organs, it was stipulated that since the area is of military nature, no information should leak. The regime has also established a crisis headquarters to deal with the situation.

Parchin, located 30 kilometers south of Tehran, is a sprawling 60 square kilometer site. Centers and defense related industries located in Parchin belong to the Ministry of Defense (The Defense Industries Organization, Iran’s Aerospace Industries Organization, and Institution for Research and Training of the Defense Industries.)”

“Iranian-backed kidnappers demand release of Special Groups commander”
By BILL ROGGIONovember 18, 2007 6:00 PM

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “The kidnapping of five British contractors — four security guards and a financial consultant — has long been suspected of being an Iranian-backed job. A recent report in the Times Online confirmed an Iranian extremist group has demanded the release of Qais Qazali, the leader of the Iranian-backed Qazali network, in exchange for the five Britons.

“Senior Iraqi government sources say their captors have promised they will not be harmed but any rescue attempt would endanger them,” the Times Online reported. “They claimed the hostages will remain prisoners ‘for as long as it takes’ to secure the release of Qais Qazali, a former chief spokesman for the Shi’ite Mahdi Army.”

The British have been unable to secure the release of their citizens as the US military has refused to release Qazali. “Talks aimed at freeing the hostages are believed to have reached deadlock this month after British negotiators said they had no power to free Qazali,” said the Times Online.

Qazali is not a low-level Shia extremist commander, but one of the most senior Iranian-backed terrorists captured in Iraq.”
