:::FreeRepublic's Threat Matrix:::
U.S. to Offer Turkey Help on PKK

The U.S. is to offer Turkey a package of measures to dissuade Ankara from mounting a large-scale military incursion into Iraq to attack PKK Kurdish guerrillas, who have killed scores of Turkish soldiers in recent weeks.

Ahead of a meeting in Washington on Monday between President George W. Bush and Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Turkey’s prime minister, U.S. officials said Ankara would have to get concrete American help to combat the PKK, which has bases in northern Iraq from where it frequently launches attacks into Turkey.

“Erdogan has to go back with the belief that for whatever reason, the U.S. is serious” about tackling Turkey’s concerns regarding the PKK, said Matthew Bryza, deputy assistant secretary at the U.S. state department responsible for Turkey policy. Full story...

The Dems have never been big on border enforcement!

Democratic debate on TV tonight. It'll be one of the few scripted shows aired (sarcasm). Promises made and not kept are politics to count on. What they've done to date (before any of us casts a vote) is more akin to what they'll do "if" elected. Thus far, other than a select few, crickets are chirping.

“Norway to review ABC Krekar tape”
Peter Wilson, Europe correspondent | November 16, 2007

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “THE Norwegian Government yesterday said it would analyse an Australian television interview with the country’s most controversial refugee, Mullar Krekar, to determine if the Kurdish extremist had broken any laws.

However, officials warned it was unlikely they would be able to charge Krekar with inciting violence under current laws, which do not yet reflect the rise of Islamic terrorism or the European Union’s toughened stance on preventing terrorism.

Cabinet minister in charge of immigration Bjarne Hakon Hanssen called a press conference in Oslo yesterday, just hours before the broadcast on Norwegian television of the ABC Foreign Correspondent interview in which Krekar called for attacks on Australian forces in Iraq.

A string of similarly provocative comments by Krekar, who has long advocated suicide bombing against Western forces in Iraq, have been found not to have breached Norway’s laws.”

“Wants Krekar confined
Norway’s Progress Party is not satisfied with proposals to restrict or monitor the movements of Ansar al-Islam founder mullah Krekar.”

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “”The government does nothing, despite this man doing all sorts of funny business from his apartment in Oslo. I am not comfortable with that,” Jensen told newspaper VG.

Norway’s Supreme Court has finally ruled that Krekar can be deported and there are grounds to classify him as a threat to national security.

Krekar founded and led the Kurdish Islamic guerrilla group Ansar al-Islam, which is widely considered to be a terrorist group with links to al-Qaida. He claims to have no connection to them since 2002, but is regularly linked to statements backing suicide bombing and attacks on westerners from countries that are at war in the region.”

“Authorities mum on Krekar’s latest provocation”
ARTICLE SNIPPET: “ABC of Australia reported that Krekar said in an interview due for broadcast on Tuesday that he is allowed to kill Australian soldiers in Iraq. He said that according to Islam, he can also kill their interpreters and people who give them food, water or medicine, because it’s a war situation in Iraq.

ABC reported in a synopsis of the interview that Krekar also urged his followers to kill both Australian and American soldiers.

Krekar also justified the killing of Australian journalist Paul Moran in 2003, telling ABC’s reporter that Moran “was also our enemy.”

The ABC report reveals that Krekar had detailed information on Moran’s killing, including what the Saudi Arabian suicide bomber who killed him was doing during the final minutes of his life. That suggests Krekar continues to control or at least be involved with insurgents in Iraq.”

A PROTESTER tried to rush at Prime Minister John Howard in Adelaide today but was stopped by bodyguards.

Mr Howard had just begun making an address at the Adelaide Convention Centre when a man stood up from the audience and ran towards the stage.

The man – who was carrying an object that appeared to be a basket - was tackled by Federal Police just metres from the stage.

OREGON WHITE SUPREMACIST SENTENCED FOR ATTACK ON SYNAGOGUE

WASHINGTON – Yesterday, Gabriel Doyle Laskey, 22, was sentenced to six months incarceration (with work release), six months home detention, and five years probation for his role in a 2002 rock attack on Temple Beth Israel, in Eugene, Ore., in which a group of men threw stones etched with swastikas through the synagogue’s windows during a religious service. In April of this year, his brother Jacob Laskey, the ringleader of the group, was sentenced to more than 11 years in prison for charges relating to the attack and his efforts to obstruct justice in the case. Another defendant, Gerald Poundstone, was sentenced to 15 months imprisonment in September 2006.

According to the plea agreements and statements in federal district court in Eugene, Ore., the Laskey brothers and Poundstone, along with two other men, conspired to intimidate Jewish congregants at the Temple Beth Israel. The men traveled to the synagogue on Oct. 25, 2002, in a vehicle driven by Jacob Laskey. They then threw rocks etched with swastikas through the synagogue’s stained glass windows while 80 members of the temple were inside. After throwing the rocks, the men fled the scene. The Laskey brothers and Poundstone pleaded guilty to various charges including conspiracy to deprive persons of their civil rights and intentional destruction of religious property. Jacob Laskey pleaded guilty to additional charges including obstruction of justice-related charges and a firearms offense.

“Such an attack on peaceful worshipers, using a symbol calculated to instill fear in a particular community, is a heinous act that will not be tolerated,” stated Rena J. Comisac, Acting Assistant Attorney General for the Civil Rights Division. “The Department of Justice is committed to the vigorous enforcement of federal hate crime laws.”

“Prosecuting individuals who seek to harm others because of their religion, race or national origin is a top priority of the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Oregon and the Department of Justice,” stated Karin Immergut, U.S. Attorney for the District of Oregon.

The Department of Justice has compiled a significant record on criminal civil rights prosecutions in recent years. For example, in the last seven years, the Civil Rights Division brought 41 cross-burning prosecutions and convicted 60 defendants for these heinous crimes. And, in the last two fiscal years, the Division convicted record numbers of defendants for civil rights violations. In fiscal year 2007, the Division convicted 189 defendants, the highest number of defendants ever in the history of the Division, which surpassed last year’s record number of 181 defendants.

The government’s case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney William E. (Bud) Fitzgerald and Civil Rights Division Trial Attorney Roy Conn III. The case was investigated by special agents from the Eugene office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

For Immediate Release
Office of the Press Secretary
November 15, 2007

Statement by the Press Secretary

White House News
This evening House Democrats passed legislation that would dangerously weaken our ability to protect the Nation from foreign threats. A mere three months ago reasonable Democrats joined with their Republican colleagues to craft a bill that responsibly provides our intelligence professionals the tools they need to protect our Nation and close a dangerous gap in our intelligence. We are disappointed that this kind of bipartisan cooperation was so quickly abandoned. Instead, the House Democrat’s bill to reauthorize the Protect America Act (PAA) fails to give our intelligence community the tools it needs, and it fails to protect companies facing massive lawsuits for allegedly stepping up and answering the Nation’s call for help after the 9/11 terrorist attacks. If this bill is presented to the President in its current form, the Director of National Intelligence and the President’s other senior advisers will recommend that he veto it.

The Senate Judiciary Committee also considered legislation to reauthorize the PAA. Not only would this bill reverse the substantial work of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence to provide the tools our intelligence community needs, it ignores the issue of liability protection. This bill would also result in a veto recommendation.

The bill reported by the Senate Intelligence Committee with strong bipartisan support, while not perfect, would provide our intelligence community the essential authorities they need, and it includes retroactive liability protection. This serious, consensus bill would establish a solid, long-term foundation for our intelligence community’s efforts to target terrorists and other foreign intelligence targets located overseas. It should serve as the basis for congressional legislation that the President could support.

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “The Treasury Department-led Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS) is conducting a 30-day investigation into the proposed merger between 3Com and China’s Huawei Technologies to determine if the acquisition poses a threat to U.S. national security.

U.S. officials said the investigation is in the early stages and is being carried out under the rules governing past CFIUS investigations, meaning after the 30-day probe is done, a more in-depth 45-day probe could be carried out if the first inquiry finds problems with the deal.”

Hamas Starts Gaza Boy Band

By Jeremy Reynalds
Correspondent for ASSIST News Service
GAZA (ANS) — The Hamas has upped its involvement in the entertainment industry this week with the creation of a “boy band” in the Gaza Strip.

Israel Today reported that members of the band, named “The Protectors of the Homeland,” are all Hamas gunmen.

A Hamas spokesman told Sky News that the band’s purpose is to “raise (the public’s) spirit through entertainment and encourage the troops.”

Israel Today reported that the Protectors will sing about dead terrorists, Islamic values and gaining control of Palestine from the Jews.

Last month, Hamas announced that it had begun construction on a $200 million movie production studio in Gaza. The studio, which Israel Today reported will be used to produce propaganda films against Israel, is being built on the ruins of a former Jewish community uprooted during Israel’s 2005 withdrawal from Gaza.

Modeling its plans on the example of Universal Studios in Hollywood, Israel Today reported the Hamas studio compound will eventually house Gaza’s first major amusement park.
